Not only is it obviously fraud, but fake citations were never even remotely a thing pre-AI. We all knew what the norms were, we all knew how to do our jobs. So I don't see how this can even be a debate.

Wtf do the government want from us here!? They plainly, *plainly*, do not actually want international students. Their whole line of policy for years has been making it more difficult for such people to come here or stay after they graduate! Why are they also out here encouraging us to attract more!?

Everyone faces pressure. Pressure comes from employers to work more hours, from societal expectations to lose weight, from the government to leave the country, and from family to have children. My new book considers when pressure invalidates consent, and how we can make consent more voluntary. 1/3

Having now read the Atlantic piece, it seems there are two articles rolled in here, one that makes an excellent point about the hypocrisy of elite uni's anti-racism + union bashing, another, not very good, that makes a bunch of extreme inferences from experiencing academic hiring on the inside.

I am only partially caught up on the Cambridge affair, but the defense that "you would find similar plaigarism in everyone's work!" is insulting to the hard work of everyone in academia who strive to produce original, rigorous research.

big part of right now is companies trying to convince us that pedestrian and mid content is actually sophisticated. but then there is also something pedestrian about constantly pointing that out. if you treat nolan's odyssey as what it is - a big dumb summer blockbuster - your life will be great.

Due to the state of the global job market, our faculty has been able to hire many excellent scholars who are overqualified for junior posts and so able to quickly get promoted. In true British HE brain fashion, their success has now become"problem" that the university needs to solve.

It's weird that the current centrist "why don't people like Starmer despite all his achievements" discourse completely ignores Mandelson and Epstein. Maybe part of the issue is that the labour right had some terrible people in it!

Steven Klein @stevenklein.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
I think a lot of people are happy with this - they just don't see it as a product of Starmer, who has largely ran away from most of these achievements, and then suspended the whip over 2-child, banned palestine action, and gone hard right on immigration.

wrong analysis but this is right: "Governments which succeed don’t start with a personality contest. Or a political question – as in, how do we ‘save the country’ from Reform. They start with an idea, a project, a governing purpose, an analysis of what is wrong and a plan to put it right. "
