Social science should be more open with the fact that novelty is smaller and smaller and more constructed. In like 1950, you could be like "we don't know how congressional committees work here is my book on congressional committees". Not the case now.

Excited to share our new working paper with @benyoel.bsky.social: we analyse public opinion dynamics around the consequential election in Hungary last April and specifically look at (anti-)democratic attitudes in the aftermath of Orbán's defeat. Available here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Since January 6, 2021 is back in the news today, I want to share some substantive points from my paper on measuring the emotional environment of news.
News That's Madder: Measuring Emotional Partisan News in the Wake of the 2020 Presidential Election
Erin S. Cikanek
esc222@cornell.edu

Abstract: Monitoring the emotional signals media provides to the public may have important
implications for political attitudes and behaviors. This requires that citizens are able to
perceive the emotional signals which emanate from news programming. I demonstrate
members of the public perceive variation in the emotional intensity of words, concur-
rently validate that survey respondents provide similar emotional ratings for audio and
text news excerpts, and that emotional perceptions of news transcripts are invariant
to partisan predispositions. I then use perceptions of emotions in news transcripts to
analyze the emotions of partisan, prime-time news in the wake of the 2020 US Presi-
dential Election. Members of the public perceive Fox News as angrier than equivalent
programming on MSNBC in the weeks prior to the January 6 attack on Congress. I
also compare my results to a bag-of-words approach, revealing that using only word
counts may mask important emotional di!erences in news environments.

People who trust and cooperate with ingroup members are very likely to trust and cooperate with outgroup members This general prosocial trust exists in every country, but it is strongest in the Netherlands and weakest in Pakistan. It was also very high in the US www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

In Sweden, you are allowed to hand out party ballots outside polling stations but are not allowed to campaign ourside them. This is totally unenforceable and baffling that this is legal.

One tip to new PhDs. You probably are worried that an audience member will "catch" some fatal flaw in your research. You should be more worried that five minutes in everyone is answering emails on their laptop. If people are engaging (even critically), it is better than not paying attention.

🚨 Workforces exposed to globalization and decarbonization are often overwhelmingly male. New article at @ajpseditor.bsky.social with @rickyclark.bsky.social and @rkhoban.bsky.social asks how layoffs of these men shape voting: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
AJPS article: "Breadwinner Backlash." Abstract: Low-skilled men have long been vulnerable to globalization, decarbonization, and other forms of economic disruption. When shocks are realized, women often increase their paid labor to compensate for men's loss of income. We study how layoffs of low-skilled men and concurrent shifts in workforce composition toward women affect voting. We theorize that this labor market rebalancing produces “nostalgic” coalitions of men and women that seek a return to male-breadwinner family models. Such attitudes fuel right-wing movements that pledge to protect conservative gender roles. Evidence from local labor markets and voting in the United States over the last two decades, as well as a longitudinal study tracking individual Americans over several decades, support this theory. These findings contribute a new gender-based account of the globalization backlash.

Project Title: Benchmarking the Autocrat: How Comparisons Shape Regime Support

London School of Economics and Political Science

Value awarded: £10000

Funded by: BIST

Authoritarian governments survive partly by shaping the comparisons their citizens make. People judge a government not against an absolute standard but against a reference point: the country's own past, or other countries. This project asks which comparison most affects whether citizens of an authoritarian state support their government and its institutions. The study offers the first experimental evidence on whether controlling the reference point is a tool of authoritarian resilience, and on which comparisons threaten or reinforce it.
