The most charitable interpretation I can muster for this sentencing judge's effusive praise of a victim impact statement *in the form of an AI video of the murder victim* is the judge was reflecting the victim's family's emotional energy back to them But, man is this grotesque

If the concept of Rights stands for anything it's that a person can't be summarily rendered out of the country and into torture—and the right-wing justices don't just reject this, they perceive the lower federal courts who *do* believe in Rights as engaged in a sort of rebellion against them

Incredible. The 11th Circuit, in a 3-0 opinion (two Obama appointees and one Trump 1.0 appointee), agrees that Trump and his lawyers have failed to rebut the judge's finding that the entire IRS settlement was collusive, highlighting that no other explanation for their conduct was even offered.
IV
The appellants mount two main attacks on the district
court’s speech-related sanction. First, they argue that the court
lacked a sufficient basis to find that the lawsuit and the settlement
were collusive and that Messrs. Brito and Epstein acted in bad faith.
Second, they contend that the sanction is a broad and impermissible gag order which constitutes a prior restraint and violates the
First Amendment. We conclude that the appellants have not made
a strong showing that they will succeed on either of these grounds. The appellants did not submit or offer any evidence to explain their litigation conduct or demonstrate that the lawsuit and the settlement were not collusive. Given the record before us, the
appellants have not made a strong showing that the district court
committed clear error in its collusion and bad faith findings

Fascinating to compare the latest YouGov/Economist generic ballot polling with their Oct. 21–23, 2018 poll d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/ec... That snapshot was on the eve of the election, and, uh, the responses for "definitely/probably going to vote" 2018 v. 2026 are strikingly similar:
Economist/YouGov Poll, October 21-23, 2018, 1500 US Adults
Question 87. Vote likelihood
Will you vote in this year's Congressional elections?

Overall Results

Among all respondents:

76% said they would definitely vote.
10% said they would probably vote.
6% said they might vote.
3% said they would probably not vote.
5% said they would definitely not vote.
Virtually no respondents reported having already voted (0%).

In total, 86% expressed at least a probable intention to vote, while only 8% indicated they probably or definitely would not vote.

Gender

Men reported slightly stronger voting intentions than women.

79% of men said they would definitely vote, compared with 73% of women.
Women were somewhat more likely to say they might vote (7% versus 5%) or definitely would not vote (6% versus 4%).

Overall, both genders exhibited high expected turnout.

Age

Age was one of the strongest predictors of vote likelihood.

Only 56% of adults aged 18-29 said they would definitely vote.
The figure rose to 65% among those aged 30-44.
77% of those aged 45-64 said they would definitely vote.
Among seniors aged 65 and older, 89% said they would definitely vote.

Younger adults were much more uncertain:

18% of those 18-29 said they would probably vote.
15% said they might vote.

By contrast, only 2% of seniors said they might vote and just 4% said they would probably vote. The data show a clear increase in certainty about voting with age.

Race

White respondents reported the highest vote certainty.

81% of White respondents said they would definitely vote.
75% of respondents in the “Other” category said the same.
The figure was lower among Black respondents (59%) and Hispanic respondents (53%).

Hispanic respondents showed the greatest uncertainty:

20% said they would probably vote.
11% said they might vote.
10% said they would definitely not vote.

Black respondents were also comparatively more likely to say they might vote (17%).

Party Identification

Republicans reporte…Economist/YouGov Poll Sept. 26-28, 2026 - 1429 U.S. Registered Voters

Question 41. Likely Voter in 2026 Midterm Elections
How likely are you to vote in the election in November?

Overall Results

Among all registered voters surveyed:

71% said they definitely will vote.
14% said they probably will vote.
6% said they maybe will vote.
4% said they probably will not vote.
2% said they definitely will not vote.
3% were unsure.

Combining the top two categories, 85% indicated they were at least likely to vote, while only 6% said they probably or definitely would not vote.

Sex

Men reported higher certainty about voting than women.

77% of men said they definitely will vote, compared with 67% of women.
Women were more likely than men to say they probably will vote (17% versus 11%) and maybe will vote (7% versus 4%).

The gender gap appears to reflect greater certainty among men rather than greater overall voting intention, since large majorities of both groups expected to participate.

Race

Voting intention was relatively similar across racial groups, though Hispanic voters expressed somewhat less certainty.

73% of White respondents said they definitely will vote.
71% of Black respondents said the same.
72% of Hispanic respondents said they definitely will vote.

However, Hispanic respondents were more likely to select “probably will vote” (19%) than White (13%) or Black (12%) respondents, indicating somewhat more uncertainty about turnout.

Black respondents stood out for having the highest percentage answering “don’t know” (5%).

Age

Age was strongly associated with turnout certainty.

57% of voters aged 18-29 said they definitely will vote.
67% of those aged 30-44 said so.
73% of those aged 45-64 said so.
85% of those aged 65 and older said they definitely will vote.

Younger voters were considerably less certain:

25% of 18-29 year-olds said they probably will vote.
8% said maybe will vote.
4% said definitely will not vote.

By contrast, older voters were much mo…

After Jean-Paul Marat was assassinated on July 13, 1793, the Jacobins arranged a Roman lying-in-state with laurel crown, except his skin was turning green, his tongue kept lolling out so they had to cut it, and to pose him holding a quill they had to cut off his arm and sew another arm on
IX
WHEN NEWS OF THE ASSASSINATION was brought to the Convention there was an immediate outbreak of shouting and sobbing, grand eulogies and laments taken from stage tragedies. Given the success of David's funeral and painting for Lepelletier, it was inevitable he would get the call. Pointing to the Lepelletier painting that hung on the Convention wall, one of the deputies, Guirault, invoked his creation of Lepelletier as a republican martyr and called out, David... where are you?... There is one more work for you to do I shall do it, he replied. How could he not?
The painting A Marat, 1793, was, then, intended to be a pendant for the Lepelletier. But there was one serious difference from that earlier commission: the season. Lepelletier had been embalmed and laid out in the depths of winter. This was the hottest July anyone could remember, and Marat's body was in any case not in prime condition. The raw red skin was beginning to turn an alarming shade of green even before David's top embalmer and five assistants could get to him. Some cosmetic work was immediately necessary. The tongue ligature of the Friend of the People had to be cut to prevent it from lolling out of his mouth, and the face itself had to be heavily whitened. But it proved impossible to close Marat's eyescompletely, giving him precisely that hooded, toady look of Girondin demonology.
For three days the body was laid out in the deconsecrated church of the Cordeliers, where it was raised up high on a Roman bed similar to the one used for Lepelletier, with a great candlestick stationed on each corner. Although David could hardly have Marat sitting up as he had last seen him, he wanted the arm that had continued to write for the People to be visible. But rigor mortis had made that so difficult that an arm from another corpse had to be found and attached - not altogether successfully, since one morning. distressingly, the arm was found on the floor, separated from the body but still holding the pen. After a torchlit procession through the streets, and republican sermons that naturally compared Marat to Jesus, his body, minus his heart, was interred in the gardens of the Cordeliers. The heart was set in a porphyry urn that was then suspended from a silken cord above the venerating public, swinging to and fro, a perpetuum mobile of the Revolution.
David, then, was all too aware of how provisional were these rites of preser-vation. In their culogies many of the Jacobins had declared that the truest revenge against the assassin's crime - which had been to obliterate Marat - would be to make him forever present, not only in memory but in sight too. David's painting was supposed to do just that - to make Marat-Martyre (the play on words wasn't missed, of course) permanent as the holy icon of the Republic.

This is a cool story about hunting for Paulinella, a photosynthetic microbe whose organelles stem from an endosymbiosis that occurred only ~100MYA (independent from plants’ one ~1500MYA), …though the story glides over some bitter details about financial distress Donald Trump lawlessly caused
cloud of uncertainty. A group chat with roughly 300 scientists, which had been used mainly for advice during tax season, turned into a career lifeline. The scientists — early in their careers and who often had little financial cushion to bridge even one missing paycheck - shared information, strategized and commiserated.
One day, Dr. Van Etten shared that she was having a particularly difficult time. A few moments later, Dr. Willoughby showed up in her DMS.
As with so many of the freezes to federal funding, this one was disruptive and confusing, but temporary. A judge stepped in, the Trump administration rescinded its memo and the science foundation turned its payment system back on a week later.
Some scientists did lose runding because their grants were deemed "not aligned with program goals." Many, like Dr. Van Etten and Dr. Willoughby, were shaken but able to resume their work.

This 'reasoning' really is ridiculous Imagine if DHS said "we're expanding the SAVE program with door-to-door raids and summary arrests". Would the Roberts Court really say IIRIRA would prevent anyone from "invoking a law" to stop that?

"sure, there's a law, but the relevant personnel are barred from enforcing it" is like the Roberts Court's epitaph
