"We are regulating AI" translates to "we are going to prevent it from doing things that it couldn't do anyway" not "we are going to stop AI companies from stealing and hold them accountable"

A flyer for a heavily corporate company named TORMENT NEXUS LLC. They appear to be advertising ways to make life so much harder, but couched in so much corporate language it looks like a damned good deal.

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.

Let’s see what the Ancient Aliens guy thinks of the UFO files
Facebook post from Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. The recent wave of released UFO / UAP (whatever) videos is questionable because of how infinitely bad and shoddy some of the released footage is. We ALL have seen infinitely better material than what was released officially. For decades. What are you faffing around for? Show us what you have that's incontestable. Period. What are you afraid of? Stop faffing around. We CAN handle the truth, actually. Show the RIVETS or go home.

...and if you think "rivets" are only a terrestrial invention, YOU are the problem.

why does google suck now

Google search feels worse today because its core experience has been traded for ad revenue, clutter, and automated summaries. Several systemic changes have contributed to this decline:

YouTube
·Alex Falcone
 +2
Ad Clutter and Sponsoring: Top results are heavily dominated by pay-per-click ads and sponsored content, forcing authentic organic results further down the page.
AI Overviews: AI summaries frequently occupy the most prominent space above the search results, which can sometimes scrape and surface incorrect information instead of directing you to the original source.
SEO Gaming: A constant arms race between Google and websites optimizing for search engines means that many results are filled with affiliate links and keywords, rather than genuine, high-quality human content.
Reduced Discoverability: Google has heavily deprioritized exact-match boolean searches (like putting phrases in quotes) and natural language queries, meaning it hides the niche human-written content you are actually looking for.

seo2.onreact.com
 +5
If you are frustrated with the current state of search, you can bypass the clutter by modifying your habits or trying alternative platforms:
Add "Reddit" to Queries: Many users rely on finding actual human discussions by appending site:reddit.com or just "reddit" to their search.
Try Privacy-Focused Engines: Alternatives like DuckDuckGo filter out the heavily bloated tracking and aggressive sponsored widgets.
Consider Paid Search Alternatives: Platforms like Kagi offer ad-free, premium search experiences designed to surface high-quality human content rather than SEO-farmed websites.

I think the major difference between when Google Glasses were laughed/shamed off the market and now is that tech companies have stopped pretending to care what people think about their products - with enough pressure, they can achieve some level of saturation, and everyone else can just deal with it

a fucked up thing about every global crisis we have is that it’s always the little people bearing the financial cost. it’s individuals & small businesses who are told to tighten their belts. meanwhile supermarkets & oil companies etc put their prices up at the mere suggestion of inconvenience

probably completely obvious but the reason Project Hail Mary is doing so well (apart from being very well made) is that it is all about problem-solving, cooperation, self-sacrifice, and forming deep relationships with those from far away. All values that people feel a desperate need for right now.

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

Do LLMs, as a technology, have potential value to pro-human causes? Sure, probably. But Grok and ChatGPT as they stand, especially in a landscape with zero regulation or consumer protection, are never gonna get us there.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

The reason why RAM has become four times more expensive is that a huge amount of RAM that has not yet been produced was purchased with non-existent money to be installed in GPUs that also have not yet been produced, in order to place them in data centers that have not yet been built, powered by infrastructure that may never appear, to satisfy demand that does not actually exist and to obtain profit that is mathematically impossible

JANET:
Ugh...

LIZ:
What's up?

JANET:
I am so bored of cooking peas!

LIZ:
Have you tried...

AI peas?

JANET:
AI peas?

LIZ:
They're peas with AI!

[Liz holds up to us a packet of peas labelled: Pea-i AI - Peas with AI].

LIZ:
Al-powered peas harness the potential of your peas

JANET:
What

LIZ [Now a voiceover as we cut to a whizzy technology diagram of peas all connected by meaningless dotted lines]

Why not take your peas to the next level with Al Peas' new Al tools to power your peas?

[Show a techno diagram of a pea with a label reading 'AI' pointing to a random zone in it]

LIZ:

Each pea has Al in a way we haven't quite worked out yet but it's fine

With Al peas you can supercharge productivity and make AI work for your peas!

LIZ:
Our game-changing Pea-Al gives you the freedom to unlock the potential of the power of the future of your peas workflow

to boiling the peas

to eating the peas

To spending millions on adding Al to the peas and then having to work out what that even means.
