Probably the worst crime of the AI industry to date is making Mark Zuckerberg somehow, against all odds, appear to be the most sane and human-seeming rich person in Silicon Valley.

I upgraded to the new Mac OS today and I feel that with the sidebars no longer in their hideous “floating” configuration, a great evil has been put down. Trump will die or be impeached before 2028.

I’ve been feeling more unsettled than ever about AI this week and the reason I think (besides the drama, obv) is, on the one hand, I don’t really think LLMs are going to turn out to be *that much* more capable, but also the AI-critical community is now seemingly in permanent la la land.

It’s so cool how this website is filled with people who think liberal arts degrees make you a good person when Peter Thiel and JD Vance are the country’s most prominent philosophy degree holders.

you can just look at the donations -- this is not the case! anthropic employees' political donations are 99% to Democrats, and disproportionately to politicians who want to regulate their employer. anthropic employees' support for a Alaska politician promising a moratorium was a microscandal!

The fundamental problem the tech industry has I think is that they've reversed the deal. It used to be that the ads and surveillance were justified by the fact that the service was free. Now you have to pay and you still get tracked and advertised to.

So far it seems like AI is extremely capable of performing tasks which can be turned into empirical, objective measures. So: proofs, yes; writing stories, no. Fixing bugs: good lord, yes; figuring out what the software needs to do, not really.

I have basically no idea where AI is going at this point because I underestimated its ability to do my job a few years ago and now I am nervous about making the same mistake again while also still fundamentally not really believing it’s going to replace all knowledge workers.

Really rare to spot something like this in the wild, but The Wall Street Journal ran a "Supreme Court Expansion Is Secretly Unconstitutional Actually" column that directly refutes its thesis in the paragraph that immediately follows. Beautiful stuff. www.wsj.com/opinion/is-c...
Last week only one House Democrat, North Carolina’s Don Davis, voted for a measure to propose a constitutional amendment fixing the court’s size at nine. But it’s unclear that such an amendment is necessary. Democrats cite several precedents from the 19th century in which Congress voted to increase the number of justices. But there are no clear precedents that support a partisan court-packing plan and a strong argument that it would be an unconstitutional assault on judicial independence and the separation of powers.

Article III establishes “one Supreme Court,” and Article I mentions “the Chief Justice,” but otherwise the Constitution leaves to Congress the authority to establish the structure of the federal judiciary, including the number of justices. In the Judiciary Act of 1789, Congress created the Supreme Court with six justices.

This is, I think, a good example of how confused Bluesky has gotten. Anthropic is roughly 100% effective altruists, a group that is notorious for earnestly believing that AI is very dangerous. Yet the reaction everyone has to this guy is either “they’re lying” or “marketing should stop them.”

bsky has its head in the sand about AI. as a creative tool, yeah, it’s limited, duh. and it’s obviously not sentient or capable of emotions. but if you still think it’s just the latest bitcoin bubble, you’re not paying attention. this tech is going to change things. time to come to terms with that.
