Manny's cafe was once a hotspot for public chats about politics. But it avoided any discussion of San Francisco's role in incubating tech fascism. Then Manny ran for office as a darling of the tech billionaire set. Now he's dropped out amid sex assault claims. sfstandard.com/2026/10/01/m...

Everyone is so tired. Exhausted. And I'm talking to so many friends and colleagues who are hoping for a functional institutional power to come along and take care of them, take the annoying work and worry away. An employer, a publisher, a big funder, an elected leader, etc. I think it's just us.

Gonna be honest, between Jacob Gellar and Cornell (I went to Ithaca College) it’s been a real shit week. Having just written extensively about rape and assault for a recent video, all this has honestly just hit me awfully. I hate living in a culture where rape is so common, so excused and enabled.

EVERYONE! See Forgotten Island before it leaves theaters! It's as if a Filipino who was deeply affected by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was raised on anime, Tumblr, and was not-so-secretly a furry, got to animate a movie. So fun and heartfelt. Dreamworks have really been killing it.

I always ask if people think hearing a digital piano programmed to play a concerto is the same as hearing my dad — who’s been playing for 79 years and still practices hours a day — do it. And funnily enough no one has ever agreed that it is.

ZOMG check out this variant cover for issue three of #StarTrek Zero Point by Niclas Mortensen. I love all the covers for this issue, but this one really conveys what issue three is about!
Cover shows a Federation starship. In front of it stand a Caitian (cat guy) with claws out, a Pandronian (green colony creature with weird ridges on his head) and a Tzenkethi (big dinosaur guy). All three of them are wearing Starfleet uniforms.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Harley: Wearing a venetian jester outfit reminiscent of her classic suit, with long hat jangles, a ruffled collar and skirt, and puffy sleeves. the outfit is patterned with stripes and checkerboard all in black, red, and white. she has a small black diamond painted underneath each eye.

I'm unusually irritated to discover that the turnover (samosa, empanada, clanger, patty, sambousek, etc), which is damn near universal, had not been invented at the time of my Mesopotamian game. I was all set to write about Iron Age turnovers, only to find there weren't any. Hmph!

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

It feels genuinely ridiculous having to say this, but the point of art is to connect with another human. Someone thought of that painting or melodic line or scene or paragraph that is suddenly making you weep, and that means that they saw you and understood you without even meeting you.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
