The magnificence of the mushroom
Post
I'm studying biotech and every time someone brings up mushrooms our current professeor will look either extremely excited or pained and go, "listen, mushrooms are neither plants nor animals nor something inbetween. We do not know what they are. Some are immortal. Some produce life-saving substances some are so closely related to humans that eating them may cause an allergic reaction against your own body. I cannot teach you about the mushrooms.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I think we underrate that JCO came up in 20th century New York literary circles where everyone said five most devastating insults before breakfast and as one of the last one standing, her competition is guys who get sad if their chatbot isn't sufficiently nice to them.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Scene from the TV show MASH showing a conversation between two men wearing surgical masks. One is surgeon Hawkeye Pierce. the other, wearing a silver cross around his neck and a purple stole over his shoulders, is a Chaplain, Father Mulcahy

Hawkeye: War isn't hell. War is war and hell is hell, and of the two, war is a lot worse.

Fr. Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?

Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?

Fr. Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.

Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them: Little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the top brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

As someone in the US and not subject to the UK's "any speech left of Oswald Mosley might be terrorism, so watch it guvna" laws, i feel confident in saying that it would be legally and morally justified if security forces shot every single far-right fascist in the Channel trying to commit murder.

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

MONDAY
A meme featuring a man wearing a red shirt and backwards red baseball cap carrying an absurdly oversized teal JanSport backpack on his back while standing on a city street.
Text boxes are placed over the image:
A small white box over the man is labeled "Me".
A larger white box over the enormous backpack is labeled "The pervasive fear that I am doing something wrong at all times".

everyone is posting about metroid and meanwhile this post is the main thing I know about the series
fishing-lesbian-princess

I feel like Samus Aran, when she’s not on a mission, would have a Tony Hawk type experience with people not recognizing her without her armor. Like she’d get carded buying alcohol or something and the cashier would go “Samus Aran? Ha, it’s spelled just like the bounty hunter too. I wonder what he’s up to now?”

fishing-lesbian-princess

She would definitely take advantage of this when she goes to lesbian bars and stuff. She’d just tell the cute alien girls her name is Sammy because if they knew she was the great Samus Aran they’d expect her to top

fishing-lesbian-princess

I originally put a shortened version of this in the tags but I feel it’s worth adding. Imagine being the alien girl at a lesbian bar on a federation space station. You meets this cute tall human girl who calls herself Sammy and you hit it off and share some drinks and eventually Sammy invites her back to her place. Her place is a space ship that you swear looks familiar but you can’t remember where you’ve seen it. Anyway you disregard it and spend the night fucking the brains out of this buff blonde tgirl. Then in the morning when you go to leave you make a wrong turn and catch a glimpse of the power armor belonging to the bounty hunter known across the galaxy. Imagine the realization that this “Sammy” girl you plowed into the mattress last night is singhandedly responsible for saving the universe multiple times

i agree with this i think the impulse to enforce "correct" language is connected to a project of cultural/civic nationalism i think that's why, for example, french culture is far more prescriptive about this, describing it as a sin against the language (une faute)
