The Automaton. Charcoal and 2B pencil on paper.
Charcoal drawing in thick stylised lines and shaded shadows of the head of a bald humanoid being, implacable face, eyes unseen in dark bleeding shadows. Something is dripping in thin lines from its mouth, silvery in graphite pencil.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have discovered a new antibiotic, known as manikomycin, that may be a bulwark in the fight against drug-resistant superbugs. By attacking the ribosome in a never-before-seen way, manikomycin can evade the existing mechanisms pathogens have developed to resist antibiotics.

I have seen so many people use an LLM to generate charts and graphs out of data in a spreadsheet, and that chart is totally inaccurate. And worse, they know it's inaccurate and use it anyway! At that point, why not just make it in Excel? There's a little button, it's hella easy.

I reject the entire premise that not being aware of a song or artist is a recent phenomenon. If you grew up on your local alternative rock station, you weren’t hearing the rap/r&b chart toppers. So unless they made it into a tv show/movie, you didn’t hear about it.

Ancient and beautiful amber pendants worn by hunter-gatherers during the Danish Mesolithic some 10,000 years ago! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows three glossy, bright orange, drop-shaped pieces of amber arranged in a row against a dark background in a museum display case. Each piece of amber is decorated with finely incised patterns. The smalleest piece on the left is decorated with a comb motif- three horizontal lines with short vertical lines on top. The largest piece in the middle has a patchwork of alternating incised rectangles, and the piece on the right has four evenly spaced horizontal rows a Ross the surface made up of drilled pits. Each piece of amber has a hole at the top suggesting it was attached to a cord to be worn as jewellery or suspended.

Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic'. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.

These pieces are part of the collections of the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. They are currently on loan at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle, Germany for the ‘Shamaness’ temporary exhibition.
