The formatting of this Beckett quote does still represent resilience and determination, just of a very different sort.
A neon light art piece of Samuel Beckett's famous quote "I can't go on. I'll go on" but spaced - it would seem inadvertently- so that it reads "I can't goon. I'll goon".

I don't mean what I'm about to say in a sappy way, but a fairly hard-nosed one: natural ecosystems are often remarkably good at recovering from serious local natural disasters *if they are given the chance.*

The youngest person his pager attack killed was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah, who had just started 4th grade. The pager was on a table when it went off and she picked it up to take to her dad. It exploded in her face and reports said it covered the room in her blood. She wanted to learn English.

Literally hours later, although at least nobody was killed.
MSF International 2
@MSF
On 13 September, an MSF bus carrying 10 humanitarian staff in Gaza City was damaged by an Israeli airstrike on a targeted vehicle just two metres away. One of our colleagues was injured in the strike.
The bus was clearly identified as an MSF vehicle, with a large MSF sticker visible on its roof. Once again, Israeli forces have shown a blatant disregard for the safety of humanitarian and medical personnel.
Nowhere is safe in Gaza. Civilians, healthcare workers and humanitarian staff must be protected. Clearly marked medical and humanitarian vehicles must be spared from attacks.

For example, Meta reported that the water used by power plants powering its hyperscale data centers is 20x greater than the water used for cooling the data centers This is water use directly caused by data center growth but is "hidden" because it's not happening on-site

Data centers’ hidden water footprint is linked to the grid
A Ceres analysis shows that data centers’ indirect water footprint from power plants dwarfs direct cooling.

Another lesser known impact is that many proposed data centers are built on top of wetlands These impacts are way worse than they would have been even a few years ago because in 2023 the Supreme Court rolled back federal wetland protections

The ‘time-consuming’ permits dozens of data centers are skipping
A court ruling shrinking the scope of the Clean Water Act has allowed new data centers to speed through the federal permitting process. Communities are feeling the effects.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

This image features the spectacular stone entryway and defensive walls of Acrocorinth, the ancient fortified acropolis of Corinth, Greece. Perched high on a monolithic rock formation rising 575 meters above the surrounding plains, it is recognized as the largest and most impressive ancient castle in mainland Greece. A field of red poppies (wildflowers) vibrantly carpet the steep slopes leading up to the main gate during springtime.
