Canadian centrists who are terrified of Trump are behaving exactly like conservatives. Nothing matters but their fear, which they'll use to justify absolutely anything, no matter how harmful. It's been sickening to see not only how easy people are to manipulate, but how much they actively enjoy it.

Make no mistake, trampling treaty rights at the federal & provincial level, normalizing & platforming residential schools denialism (alongside genocide denial) & sanitizing Canada's history (& present) is exactly why the Second Sons felt comfortable setting foot in Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc.

A lot of people have said to me “but why would the government lie about the risks from Covid?” And I’m sorry but the answer is always because capital is valued over lives and they want you to go back to work, it was true in the mines, true on the railroads, true post-9/11, and true now.

Somehow I missed the recent blowup around health fascism until just now. It doesn't seem to have spilled over from X to here. But I'm begging everyone, especially leftists, to read any disability history or theory. It feels like 101 stuff.

Reminder: this case didn't come down to Cycle Toronto's "bike lanes good" v. the province's "bike lanes bad" evidence. The province's own internal documents (and their staff briefing to cabinet) confirmed that bike lanes do not cause traffic congestion and ripping them out will put lives at risk.

If you struggled with lockdown or wearing a mask all the time, I would like you to sit with the fact that complete abandonment of high risk people has damned us to those exact things. Still. When, if people stepped up and did these things even a little bit more, we wouldn’t be in that position.

part of truly moving forward from this period will mean directly addressing disinformation & repairing its harm; one way i can imagine this taking shape is by addressing the very present & ongoing need for clean indoor air. this, unfortunately, would require a lot of ppl to eschew persistant denial.

Canada is in many ways the single most successful branding exercise in history. We are a neoliberal extractive colony with crumbling social infrastructure and middling economic prospects, but many Canadians will hand-wave away problems here and use those same problems to condemn Americans.

It's fun and sad and terrifying to watch the "neoliberal" governments fund oil & gas projects that the "market" abandons or refuses to fund. Neoliberalism was never a free market ideology, it was always about maintaining class and power structures.

This is scary. Good article. The more I learn the scarier it is. “Metadata capture is mass surveillance. Signal, an encryption app, is threatening to leave Canada if this bill is passed, and that will severely negatively impact journalists and activists, but that’s the point of mass surveillance.”

In just one year, Carney has wrecked a decade's worth of progress. The old climate strategy wasn't enough, but rather than strengthen it he dismantled every meaningful policy, stomped on the gas to deliver more fossil fuels, and concentrated power to run roughshod over opposition to his agenda.

A lot of what passes for “technological” reasoning is a form of imaginary wish-casting for things in the world to exist as pure objects of the mind, untethered from the actual relationships and associations they are tied into and whose existence is inconvenient to the technical dreamer.

The hantavirus outbreak isn't just about hantavirus. It's public health and IPC showing us that they have learned nothing from their mismanagement of COVID. Regardless of where hantavirus falls on the spectrum from "pandemic" to "dry run for the next pandemic", that is unacceptably sloppy.

This is despicable and also not unique in anyway. Eugenics language around COVID has been pervasive since the start. It was very literally the Biden CDC position. No party is exempt from societal loathing of disabled and chronically ill people and the celebration of our deaths.
Walensky was criticised on social media after speaking about Omicron death statistics on ABC talk show Good Morning America on Friday, when she said that the majority of Omicron fatalities had occurred in people who already had other medical conditions at the same time-known as comorbidities.
"The overwhelming number of deaths, over 75 per cent, occurred in people who had at least four comorbidities," she said."So really these are people who were unwell to begin with and yes, really encouraging news in the context of
Omicron.'

personally I think it's a very big deal that the Canada bureau chief for the @nytimes.com — certainly one of the highest-paid journalists in the country — asked an unspecified "AI tool" what Poilievre said & published its AI-hallucinated quotes in her reporting.
Editors’ Note: May 1, 2026
This article was updated after The Times learned that a remark attributed to Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, was in fact an A.I.-generated summary of his views about Canadian politics that A.I. rendered as a quotation. The reporter should have checked the accuracy of what the A.I. tool returned. The article now accurately quotes from a speech delivered by Mr. Poilievre in April. He said, “My personal opinion is that when a member of Parliament goes back on the word they made to their constituents and switches parties, constituents should be able to petition to throw them out and have a byelection. That would put the people back in charge of our democracy rather than having dirty backroom Liberal deals by Mark Carney determine our destiny.” He did not refer to politicians who changed allegiances as turncoats in that speech.

it’s funny because a lot of people will revile RFK Jr. for statements like these, but they’re okay with our current approach to covid, which is based on the same idea that “some people will fall by the wayside” but, like, not anyone who matters.

I am puzzled by the idea that creativity happens in the author’s mind and it’s just a matter of capturing it with words. That’s not my experience of writing/creativity at all. Something happens in the process itself, in your engagement with the practice.
