Re-upping this vital piece of writing. Painful and profound, it moved to reread it as soon as I’d finished the first round. The losses examined here are vast, and stay with the reader. It also helped me come to grips with the abuse I experienced.

I really love seeing all this solidarity from women and the “I am Jane Doe” posts but we did this with Me Too and nothing fucking changed. I want the men to step up and publicly promise to change themselves and call out their buddies instead of women always being forced to volunteer our trauma

I really need folks to take this discourse about how unsafe most men are and apply it to ENM because most cishet men who want ENM - and there are a lot of them out there - are absolutely not safe ppl to engage in ENM with. ENM under patriarchy when it involves cishet men is also dangerous

Just a reminder that for a lot of CSA and SA victims, the film Promising Young Women was an utter flop. Carey Mulligan was great but her character gets murdered in the end and the cops capture her killer. It is both a brutal fantasy and a failed one, and it does zero service to survivors

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

This is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment. The state of Tennessee botched an execution and tried to hide the gory consequences as witnesses twice watched a woman survival the supposedly “lethal” injection. The death penalty is a crime against humanity.

I was talking with my 11-y-o about the Cornell case and asked him what could someone have done to stop the rape, even if they felt outnumbered or scared for their safety if they confronted 7 ppl alone. His answer? “Pull the fire alarm or yell fire. Then get out and tell someone in charge.”

Jane Doe was betrayed by a man who said he was her friend. Ask the women in your lives who abused, raped, or harrassed them and you are going to find out the truth: it’s often the men who are CLOSE TO US who are the biggest danger.

What was this, the second time in a month that leftists gleefully joined in on a harassment campaign initiated by reactionaries against covid cautious people? Seems like that indicates a critical absence in awareness and analysis. Maybe y’all should fix that. And your hearts too.

I once got harrassed online for asking the NY DSA to mask at their events. Ppl accused me of fedjacking. Did that make me right wing? No. Did it make me more dedicated to disability justice and realize a lot of ppl claiming to be leftists are posers? Yes

Just read that Boston Globe piece about the lesbian bar dropping its masking requirements and I need us to sit with this. This kind of spotlight on this issue when disabled ppl have been driven out of public life, mocked for protecting themselves, and are losing Medicaid benefits. SIT WITH THAT.

With the midterms upon us, it’s time to remind everyone that it’s not DEI. It’s DEIA, and it always has been. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. And the fact that ppl in both parties keep dropping the part that applies primarily to disabled ppl is so telling

Tweets from Steve Kastenbaum

Mayor Mamdani was the only senior elected official who stayed at the 9/11 memorial ceremony at the WTC until the end. It started at 8:40 AM, and concluded close to 12:30 PM. Most of the other current electeds left at various times. Former Mayors Bloomberg & Giuliani stayed.

Mamdani stayed until the end of the memorial ceremony at which point he was seen talking with 9/11 victims' family members. All of the other senior elected officials left the 9/11 Memorial before the reading of the names concluded.

I was unfamiliar until recently with the story of Father Mychal Judge, a gay priest who became the first recorded casualty of 9/11 while administering last rites in the lobby of the North Tower. There is an effort to canonize him, which would make him the first openly gay saint in history.

I am actually grateful for social media today. If you are under 25, you are getting a more honest accounting of the post 9/11 era than I got about the post-Vietnam era than I did as a young person. I attribute this 100% to social media. Traditional media and US politicians cannot be counted on.

This is child abuse.
But forced social media assignments are just the beginning. As part of the bootcamp, students are also required to pass an eyebrow-raising heart rate challenge, in which they’re hooked up to live monitors in front of their classmates and presented with a pre-recorded video of their parents berating them.

“The challenge rule was simple,” one student wrote: “my resting heart rate was 80bpm, and I had to stay within 10 percent of that the whole time. Anything above 88 was a fail.”

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.
