Under Supt Shuldiner Seattle Public Schools managed to actually plan for where students would show up in the fall this year, avoiding the terrible 'October Shuffle' of years past when they would wait until the school year started to figure out how many teachers should be allocated to which school. 😍

We want supreme court reform. We want laws that protect our elections and outlaw gerrymandering, (yes even when you do it).

Intriguing: "He pointed to the 8-foot-wide sidewalks, and medians planted with trees, which he said can prevent collisions and provide more safety for pedestrians... But Hammond believes they do more to deter prostitution and other types of disorder than the city’s criminal penalties."

Maybe one day we’ll have a Democratic governor, a Democratic county executive, and Democratic majorities in both houses of the state legislature here in Washington State and we’ll finally be able to do something about this.

Today I discovered it's getting pretty hard to do a basic landlord credit check - the credit bureaus are pushing AI based screening that claims to incorporate comprehensive data about applicants and give them an overall score as a tenant. Oh and costs more of course. YUCK.

Your job is to play mom(dad) when you're the board president and the kids are fighting in the backseat. You love both your children equally, but man is one of them TESTING your patience. A statement from Gina Topp.
Gina Topp Headshot on a blue background, with the following words in white: From Gina Topp, Seattle School Board President:
“We urge SEA and SPS to reach an agreement today so kids can start classes tomorrow and avoid serious disruptions to families.
The agreement must support kids, special education needs, and recognize educators’ value and professionalism.
SPS is facing a fiscal crisis. The contract also needs to be financially responsible. As Ben said yesterday- “We’re not trying to balance the budget on the backs of children we’re trying to be solvent so that we can serve the needs of children.
The goal is simple: kids in class tomorrow.“

Yes, I agree the committees should not be wasting time on tons of routine approvals. However. Rankin wants to rewrite the history around getting rid of committees at the behest of her and her SOFG allies. I mean. I GUESS the audit committee continued to exist. I GUEEEESSS.

I'm not an alarmist person but I don't think the World Cup is the only time someone might want to do a lot of damage by driving through a crowd at Pike Place Market and I think the infrastructure should reflect that reality.

Thank @joshfeit.bsky.social for saying it. It means a lot coming from one of its original creators. We’ve been feeling this in SPS-land for a long time now. They don’t find schools newsworthy (in the past 15-ish years), yet have been influencing school board politics without responsibility.
I do not come to praise the Stranger. I was the news editor there for nine years two decades ago, built a dogged news section (that included ECB!), established and forged the influence of the SECB (Stranger Election Control Board), and have since watched from afar as the news section has lost its credibility
and the paper has lost its way (long before Brady Walkinshaw took over.) And so yes, I agree that their outsized influence over elections is a drag.

Over a 5-year period, there were 93 collisions in the area. 39 were injury collisions. 6 crashes injured people biking and 8 injured people walking. On nearby NE 65th St, a similar Safety Project reduced all crashes by 67%, with no fatal or serious-injury crashes after the redesign was completed.
We know safer street designs work
We have seen the difference this kind of work can make nearby. SDOT redesigned NE 65th St in Roosevelt and Ravenna after years of serious crashes. The project added safer crossings and turns, protected bike lanes, and a street design intended to reduce speeding and crashes.

The results were dramatic. After the redesign:

Crashes fell 67% on the western portion of NE 65th St. Pedestrian crashes there also fell 67%.
There were no fatal or serious-injury crashes after the full redesign was completed
The share of drivers traveling over 30 mph also dropped substantially

These U.S. headlines all occurred within the LAST 24 HOURS. A reminder that these are the types of consequences we choose to accept when we tolerate traffic violence. Crashes ≠ accidents.
Yellow Families for Safe Streets graphic titled “Within the last 24 hours…” Eight news headlines report: a 1-year-old girl killed by a vehicle in Las Vegas; a pedestrian critically wounded and two young boys fighting for their lives in California; a construction worker killed and two others injured in Nesconset; a child killed by a dump truck in Sprague; a woman killed while walking in Stamford; a Dallas pedestrian killed by an SUV and thrown into a Waymo; a missing teen killed in a crash on I-20 in Columbia County; and a man killed by multiple vehicles in Bakersfield.

Still reading through this 391 page EIS and it's making me want to throw my laptop across the room. It portrays the idea of building 500 units on Aurora Avenue instead of next to Discovery Park as a less impactful alternative, because it doesn't consider the impacts on the NEW RESIDENTS.

Seattle's critical comprehensive plan, a process that so far has taken 5 years, cost millions of dollars, hinges on whether every single person who has a spare $120 to file an appeal is satisfied that every potential, even marginal, impact is fully studied. The EIS was 3047 pages, but not adequate.

And when we talk about housing, I think we need to get away from the framing that it’s ordinary citizens fighting against evil greedy developers. Because often what we are really talking about is current residents fighting against denser housing for new/additional neighbors.

I just looked up the guidance for this thread and did NOT know that the state only covers free school meals for ELEMENTARY, and not Middle and High School. WTF!!! That makes using the "schools with >40% poverty already get free meals" excuse even more ridiculous.

There's an effort out there to both-sides the Seattle universal free school meals issue. Don't fall into that trap. Nobody forced Hollingsworth to fund her proposal for feeding poor kids during weekends/school breaks by defunding universal free school meals, rather than find other revenue.

The council never thinks about D5: the poorest census tracts are located here, counter to the SE Seattle narrative, w/ large immigrant communities and many MLLs, their schools often get close but never receive universal FRL, wish we could come together on this, but Hollingsworth has blinders on

It's very instructive to see how identitarian arguments are being deployed to DENY free school meals to kids. All over a piddling $3 million. They increased the SPD budget by $35M last year! Harrell added $150M in new spending in his last 2 years!

So why doesn't Seattle have coffee shops in its light rail stations? For real, anyone know? I keep thinking about how all the train stations in Tokyo are massive shopping centers, and shops are built into the structure under the train lines. It's super convenient and must bring in tons of rent.

The 1% cap is a simple state law. It can be repealed at any time, or loosened to something like 3% + inflation. But no one is doing the hard work of convincing legislators, despite its absolute necessity to maintain public services.

Pet rent is one of those annoyances for which the *only* solution is to increase housing supply until landlords feel forced to drop it to attract tenants. Banning pet rents in tight markets just mean fewer landlords will have any incentive to accept pets at all

If the King County roads sales tax annoys you, let me tell you how education funding works in this state. Because it's "not fair" to the school districts whose residents keep rejecting levies, we are capped in Seattle by how much revenue we can collect from our school levies.
