Fascinating to hear how Seattle’s affordable housing tax is a burden to get housing built, so it’s being mostly waived for big projects, while also hearing how it needs to be expanded into newly allowed infill zones (which will kill their projects) seattlenice.buzzsprout.com/1897925/epis...

Right as middle housing is legalized citywide by the state. Coincidence? Its not

I keep hearing Seattle is “working on” permit reform. But it’s starting to become the never ending political promise at this point. If you want to reform permitting, do less of it. Let all projects skip land use permits, vest at application, and go straight to construction permit.

I’d love to hear the completely pointless reason why our crappy building code slows down escalator speeds. People do not realize how arbitrary our code is, written by industry lobbyists.

This building in the heart of downtown is half empty and just sold for an -87% loss. What can you do with it?

You tax things you want less of. It’s why they tax cigarettes. To make it too expensive to bother with that bad habit It is a disgrace this logical fallacy is applied to housing. If you believe in IZ you don’t actually want more housing, you just want certain housing, which prevents other housing

You see, we simply can’t do that here in Seattle. Our golf courses are apparently critical bird migration habitats. Or something.

It really feels like the housing crisis has built up an entire world of consultancy and political agencies to endlessly discuss the topic rather than fixing it. There’s a whole financial and political economy around the topic now

It was a nice distraction for planning departments to study instead of upzoning low density urban neighborhoods to become more like Brooklyn

“Unlike the city of Seattle and Sound Transit, the law in British Columbia mandates high-rise zoning of 20 stories for SkyTrain stops, and eight to 12 stories within a short walk.” What’s it like living in a real city with real planners?

This is good journalism. The city of Seattle should be outright ashamed of themselves for never upzoning the area to value capture the generous investment it was gifted. Planning will never meet the moment. Ever.

Hmm. Small C conservative? The last mayor was one of those and exploded a $175M hole and even increased spending. Why do they always get to claim that? The way I see it, this seems like a liberal socialist thing to eliminate deficits.

The whole EIS process is a complete farce and just exists to slow down transit projects and upzones. It is not concerned with the environment at all

Push The Needle @pushtheneedle.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
In the 1990s, the state was paranoid we would lose Ken Griffey Jr and even the Mariners all together. To prove what a farce EIS’s are, the process was expedited and completed in 8 months despite it being on a brown site in a liquefaction zone. We speed up environmental review when we want to

We joke, but Breckenridge council said their outdoor dining was so successful that when they fully reopen their restaurants they’ll be at 150% capacity instead of 100% and it creates too many jobs they wouldn’t be able to fill so they opened Main Street to cars killing the program

So happy we are adding another new station ahead of schedule. But incredibly disappointed in the city of Seattle’s abject failure of planning that didn’t bother upzoning this area to value capture this $250M investment. 10 years of fiddling with reports and barely any change proposed. Pathetic

Push The Needle @pushtheneedle.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Station cost aside, it is an incredible disservice Seattle’s planning department did for, after 10+ years of process, not upzoning around it significantly to get a proper ROI for this regional gift they were given

If 20% of Seattle’s 165,000 single family zoned lots became a sixplex we will have added 165,000 new homes in that zone alone. This is why incremental upzones are a joke, if any of those lots builds an ADU (because it was the next upzone) it’s locked in place for 50 years even if it’s upzoned again

There were nearly 400 comments under the original article and half were about accepting this as is and pedestrianizing it. But nobody cares what they have to say apparently, so Seattle Times only is going to print the pro driving comments from suburbanites and sway public opinion.
