I feel like country music is very siloed. I grew up surrounded by country music because of my family and like any rebellious kid rejected it and didn't come back around (via indie country music) until my 30s, thanks to wanting more stuff like Neko Case. It was easy to avoid.

One data nerd friend involved in HCC gathered a bunch of data that supports some of this when the district wasn’t going to allow kids who only qualified in ELA to also accelerate in Math. Those kids are disproportionately girls. I don’t know where that decision ended up, but we limit kids so much.

Aargh! Apparently ArcGIS downgraded independent student accounts, which I started using instead of my Penn State account b/c when my enrollment lapsed due to personal STUFF, Penn State deleted my content from Online. I want to be able to keep my school stuff for my portfolio! Sigh.

I'm happy to see not just funding in the mayor's budget for more Automated Traffic Safety Cameras themselves, but a whole heck of a lot of staff to support review and prosecution of infractions. And a bunch of that money will go to safer streets infrastructure, particularly around schools.

I saw a bunch of these in Portland when we visited last February and have been following them as a thing since on real estate sites. I think they are pretty cool, especially as many of them have a wee yard that meets the “can let the dog out to do business at 2am” size need. Some are attached too.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Superintendent Community Engagement Meetings during the 2025-26 school year. We are grateful to the students, families, staff, and community members who shared their experiences, perspectives, and ideas. Your thoughtful feedback helped shape important conversations across the district and continues to inform our work as we strive to better serve every student.

We're excited to launch a new series of Community Engagement Meetings for the 2026-27 school year.

These meetings provide an opportunity for you to share feedback on the issues that matter most to our school communities.

Topics for discussion for our first meeting will include:

Academic Rigor
School Design (Neighborhood School, Option Schools, Dual Language, HC, etc.)
School Safety and Security
These topics were highlighted as priorities from last year. For each subsequent meeting, we will continue to pick topics of importance from the community.

To make participation as accessible as possible, all meetings will include:

Language interpretation (Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese) and ASL services

And I get why folks leave some schools or leave SPS all together. Moving super slow through curriculum and not finishing it all, no accelerated learning unless you test 99.9%, only remedial homework, and asking for the bare minimum (‘just read any book!’) — these things aren’t good for any kids.

It’s definitely not to the same extent, but the ‘soft bigotry of low expectations’ is something I’ve witnessed by adults in some of our southend schools, and I really don’t see enough will or effort by SPS to acknowledge and change this. People don’t know how good they have it in other schools!

This intersection has been a shirtshow for as long as I can remember. I don’t know how SDOT expects cyclists to safely cross 80th then make a left turn onto 5th to continue south. For the 5th part it’s just a “marked crosswalk” and I’ve seen how well people honor the marked crosswalks here.

I remember reading Nikole Hannah-Jones’ original article around her choice to send her kid to their local segregated school. The follow-up is heartbreaking, and though I am quite white, I think many of us who intentionally chose public school can empathize with many parts.
