Seattleites are most concerned about traffic safety because we all experience it regularly: narrowly missing getting hit while walking in a crosswalk, seeing people using center turn lanes as their personal speedway, etc. Most people also know someone who has died or been seriously injured:

@transportation.seattle.gov delivering protection for people who ride bikes!!! Thank you!! Just yesterday on my walk home from light rail I saw three cyclists on Henderson (two on Lime bikes). People are biking and scooting in Rainier Beach, and pretty soon they get to feel safe while doing so.

Yeah. Wrote a whole book about it. We make issues salient in discourse through consistent effort. It’s an empirical fact but folks acts like political issues& issue attitudes are sprung from a “kitchen table” cabbage patch. We should argue for what we want. Again & again. Until it’s common sense.

SPS can and should improve its delivery of services, particularly special education services. But the state needs to fund its paramount duty: K-12 public education. This year, SPS expects to spend ~ $300 million this year providing special ed services, while the state funds only $180 million of it.

Washington state needs to actually fulfill its paramount duty, and amply fund K-12 public schools, or we face major disaster. Last I followed this closely (in 2024) SPS was spending $100 million more than the state provided SPS for special education, and student outcomes were poor. Change is needed.

Seattle: this seems to be a way we can prevent more youth lives lost (particularly our Black and Brown boys). It’s a group strategy focused on high risks folks, who are called in with police & elders & social workers, given consequences if gun violence continues, and offered resources & a way out.

I think instead of complaining about critics, councilmembers would do well to consider what's at the heart of the criticism—in this case, the concern that kids truly will continue to go hungry at school, as they do today, simply because they're over the income cutoff or their parents don't apply.

Read this before you believe the news. Big picture, after the 2020 drop, public school enrollment is *not* sharply dropping, and the largest share of staffing (teachers) isn’t changing much on a per pupil basis. I like how this analysis shows trends by locale—city, suburbs, towns, and rural.
