This is also the case when social and political scientists use synthetic data purporting to stand in for real humans and real human social relations and behaviors; and the task they are also looking for an excuse not to do is research.

what does it take to get a job at SpaceX? -total loyalty to Musk, above any form of professional ethics or personal morality -cool with racism, sexism, transphobia, etc -enjoys building the future of generated CSAM and non-consensual nudes -willing to sacrifice family, hobbies, identity to work

The failure to crack down on crimes but with computer has rotted a lot of society. PayPal should have been destroyed for not following AML laws not netted Thiel and Musk millions.

Setting aside the fact that most of these people did not, in fact, break the law, what does this suggest about how the next administration should handle the members of this one, nearly all of whom have broken many laws?

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

This particular bunch is so dumb that they have the level of confidence in their own intellect which only comes from never having had to realize that other people may be smarter. One of the most important parts of higher education is learning that you are not a singular genius who is always right.

It's funny because noted sex-cult leader Big Yuds' argument for the AI murdering us all is that it will be a ruthlessly "logical" machine, whereas current AI is a gaussian blur of the Collective Unconscious and if it nukes us all its because we wrote a lot of fiction where AI tries to kill humans.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

Greek life is so cool because, even if they aren't cooking meth in the basement and some are, they create similar disincentives to blow the whistle or confront other members as the mafia: doing the right thing risks blowing up your housing situation, current social life, and future networks.

no kind of reform of any sort is possible while this state of affairs persists. you have to allow companies to change over time, to be amenable to different perspectives, to have actual corporate oversight by something other than one man's will. sic semper tyrannis

i think that the end goal of a lot of tech companies at this point is to destroy any point social or psychological mediation the individual has left, such that there are any only atomized individuals connected by computer networks, with the tech company oligarch as the owner or operator of said nets

the biggest point of leverage right now is to simply let capitalism work, as opposed to digital feudalism. people like Thiel have said over and over again that they do not like competition and see the founder-king as a heroic figure that should have maximum power to do as he sees fit
