Howard V. Brown did a lot of great 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine covers. Nevertheless, his June 1924 cover to "Scientific American" might be my favorite work of his, despite not actually being science fiction. I love the nonchalant surrealism.
Two guys carefully paint a scene of a harbor town surrounded by mountains - a scene which they seem to be existing inside, as giants.

Architect Edward Warren Hoak (1901-1978) was born #OTD. Working with the architectural firm of John & Donald Parkinson, Hoak was chief designer for Los Angeles Union Station. A couple of Hoak’s #architectural drawings of #UnionStationLA:

Especially considering the criminally insane New Yorker occupying the White House. And a Queens NYC native too! —Which tartly disproves all of that silly discourse on natives vs. transplants—since the rottenest apple was grown here in the Big Apple. New Yorkers tried our best to warn everyone—alas.
Trump first floated the idea of running for president in 1987, placing full-page advertisements in three major newspapers. This cartoon by artist Drew Friedman captioned "Candidate Donald Trump discusses important national issues with close advisers" depicting Trump in conversation with Mafia bosses appeared that same year in Friedman's regular "Private Lives of Public Enemies" column in Spy Magazine.

EROTIC OR HORRIFYING? William Bouguereau’s DANTE AND VIRGIL IN HELL (1850) walks an unsettling line between the two. It depicts two damned souls locked in a brutal struggle as Dante and Virgil look on. Yet Bouguereau renders their intertwined nude bodies with extraordinary sensuality. #gay #art
Inspired by Dante’s Inferno, William Bouguereau’s painting turns a scene of horror into something strangely beautiful.

These victories were achieved through the efforts of Civil Rights activists, along with support from Neiman Marcus president Stanley Marcus, who was an early advocate for desegregation. The Neiman Marcus Dallas store manager purportedly warned Marcus that he would destroy his business this way.

The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky lunch spot frequented by Dallas elites. Later, they welcomed Black shoppers to come and buy clothes without restrictions.

For instance, they had to try on clothes over their clothes, put on protective covers when trying on hats, or weren't allowed to make returns once they brought the clothes home. These policies stemmed from racist fears that white customers would refuse merchandise previously worn by Black shoppers.
Department Store, Mobile, Alabama, 1956

By Gordon Parks

Promised gift of The Gordon Parks FoundationJoanne Wilson, one of the Thorntons’ daughters, is shown standing with her niece in front of a department store in downtown Mobile. The pair is impeccably dressed in light, summery frocks. The jarring neon of the “Colored Entrance” sign looming above them clashes with the two young women’s elegant appearance, transforming a casual afternoon outing into an example of overt discrimination. Notice the fallen strap of Wilson’s slip. Though this detail might appear discordant with the rest of the picture, its inclusion may have been strategic: it allowed Parks to emphasize the humanity of his subjects.

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵
