What they refuse to understand is that science fiction is not predictive, it's reflective of our present culture. They see it and want to make it reality, when what was asked was "what would we do if..." That's the torment nexus tweet: sci fi is wondering what we would do if we could.

this is what we're up against. people are creating problems in their heads to kill whatever hope they might still have. they would be for the good thing (people getting to see the doctor instead of dying, people not going into medical debt), but they're pre-emptively arguing against themselves

nothing says "it can't escape!" like encasing your microbe (that you totally autoclaved first, right?) in a composite of its micronutrient source and discarded carbon, conveniently protecting it from the atmosphere that will like totally kill it, in a facillity dedicated to melting ice

i feel like thats giving them too much credit; they got a LLM to come up with the chemical spray part for them, which is more or less the mechanism you use in Pandemic 2 to infect madagascar then flip a switch to kill the world

for reference, elementary kids still walk to school. the only way this happens is if your neighbors are awful. go to any community in america and you can find these people, and that the cops and CPS affirm them is dangerous as hell

there is a huge smugness the "just wear a helmet idiot!" crowd has, and it is wild to me that they are ostensibly leftists who should understand collective problems. they would look at this picture and be like "i guess they all want to die"

@sabs.bsky.social I loved your tombmates piece but I suspect you may need a new medievalist, @goingmedieval.bsky.social did people "not understand sex without penetration" back then? Real weird that the church kept telling people not to do sodomy things that nobody did. defector.com/and-they-wer...

if that was the objective of the essay wouldnt there be a lot more about what that would mean for the experience of non-living systems, that if we, a part of the universe, experience ourselves, other parts probably do as well i guess to me the thesis is:

"constrained and dogmatic" is a frustrating way to describe the phenomena that "there are many ways to be wrong but only one way to be right" oh, the right has diverse ideas about who counts as a person? how open-minded!

he looks at this and says "voters really believe that the mere fact that a politician disagrees with them about something is evidence of corruption". That's not what the graph says! Its almost all quid pro quo! He defines "social elites" as 'affirmative action, trans athletes, and abortion'

Social Murder offends conservatives to the bone. The idea that you or I may have responsibility to others is treated as more violent than consigning millions to death.

"The link here is that women are considered guilty – no matter the era – of the level of sexual interest that is at odds with societal expectation...Men always have the sexual drive that leads to societal status, and women are then defined in opposition to that expectation."
The link here is that women are considered guilty – no matter the era – of the level of sexual interest that is at odds with societal expectation. In the medieval period women are considered lustful and sex driven because the Church considered sex to be wrong. In the modern era – where sex is considered much less taboo, and is often celebrated – women are told that we are not interested in and cannot derive pleasure from the sexual act. Men always have the sexual drive that leads to societal status, and women are then defined in opposition to that expectation.

"It Really Is Not a Fruit Fly; There is a reference in Aristotle to a gnat produced by larvae engendered in the slime of vinegar. This
must have been Drosophila."

surely the people who openly and loudly announce their crimes and say "if nobody stopped me it cant have been a crime" or "lol laws only apply to dems" would never commit the crime of falsifying evidence
Oh and by the way, it’s sheerly astonishing how we’ve just helplessly accepted this empty-tabled no-chairs potluck of dork-ass potato-water-blooded failsons corralling us into a corner where we cannot even allow ourselves to consider any idea that remotely resembles a conspiracy theory, even when CONSPIRACIES SO MELODRAMATICALLY BLATANT THE WORLD’S RICHEST MAN IS OPENLY GIGGLING ABOUT DOING BIG CRIMES ON LIVE TV WHILST HIGH AS A CUMULUS CLOUD IN THE OVAL OFFICE are happening right in front of us, with only the most half-hearted attempts to hide them behind THE OCCASIONAL FUCKING HALF-DEAD POTTED PLANT. The President of the United States has repeatedly said Elon Musk secured the election for him with those gosh-dang computers he’s so good at and we just sigh and tell ourselves we can’t think about it or we’re just like them. Trump constantly panics, incredibly loudly, about the Epstein Files and hysterically screeches for people to forget they exist at least once a week, but we’ve voluntarily forbidden ourselves to even entertain the thought that, since he must know his base can’t stop slobbering all over him for longer than five seconds about anything, and everyone already knows he likes young girls, maybe there’s more to this than him being one of many customers. So now we just live like this, refusing to consider that several conspiracies might be underway from the exact kind of people who love doing conspiracies, and have done them before, over and over again, is a required demonstration of not being a fascist. So much so that I’ve almost deleted this paragraph three times because I don’t want to sound like those loose pinballs, either. FANTASTIC WORK ALL AROUND.

"a stupid game like when kids annoy their siblings by saying “I'm not touching you” while poking them with a stick. The idea is that as long as there's a buffer between you and the violence you are calling for through systemic means then your soul and professional reputation can remain clean."

feels real bad man
We have let school shootings in America persist long enough that we have created a culture where kids grow up seeing them as a path towards fame and glory. Another consequence of how thoroughly the internet has flattened pop culture, politics, and real life violence. All of it now is just another meme you can participate in to go viral. Made even more confusing by a new nihilistic accelerationist movement that delights in muddying the waters for older people who still adhere to a traditional political spectrum. Many young extremists now believe in a much simpler binary: Order and chaos. And if you are spending any time at all trying to derive meaning from violent acts like this then you are, by definition, their enemy.
