Tempted to put down my marker that it will turn out, for reasons, that AI can somehow only cure cancer for white people, and/but the fact of it will be used to justify all kinds of regulatory rollbacks impacting everyone. I try not to be that cynical. Today, I failed.

Because it's not about money, it's about power. Using concentrated wealth to be a large single customer inverts the usual relationship, now the restaurant is dependent on you, and will do what you say. Money is important because it opens the door, but making people do things is the real goal.

Thanks for this, IMO it establishes useful context. Big fan of Terrence Tao generally, but the pharma example that's caused the commotion is a bad one. Also, fun to see Beamer slides in the wild!

Just year after year of trying to explain to the most idiotic smart people to ever live that programming, mathematics, science, and everything else we do are social processes of production. Professional standards and other pro-social demands are there to ensure the process can continue.

A lot of AI assistants seem to have been built around the assumption that the rest of the world is not actually real nymag.com/intelligence...
I wanted to hear about this weird new phenomenon from the other side. The Colorado plumber laughed and once again hung up the phone. The woman at the karaoke place was more patient but sounded confused:
Was I AI? Was I selling AI? Could she speak to a real person? No and no, I said, and yes: I was a cold-calling human being who wanted to hear about her experience getting cold-called by bots. (After failing to book a room with Muse, the customer dispatched another agentic solution for the job and claims to have gotten through.)
"Ah," she said. "Okay. We don't like AI calling our restaurant. We hate it." End of call. There is something to this - computers really do work differently now and can be asked to handle tasks that used to require a human touch (or at least a cursor). But in addition to expanding the boundaries of automation, the agent-assisted power users of today are also mowing down soft and unsuspecting targets - websites, interfaces, services, and people who haven't decided how, or if, they want to respond to the replacement of customers, clients, and even friends with agents - with the advantages that come with deploying them first. Once everyone has, as Mark Zuckerberg describes it, an "exceptionally capable personal agent," does anyone?

I feel like you could make kind of a productive analogy between AI agents where they save the user time by wasting everybody else's time and the American approach to vehicle safety where occupant safety is prioritized at the expense of everybody else's. Prosocial? Never heard of her.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."

Geese are containers of all the spite, meanness, and hate taken from Canadians, transferred to them in the annual Emotional Conflux, a week after Moose-hatching season ends. The energy radiates from the CN Tower, across the ionosphere, and into geese around the globe.

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

It cut funding to IRS because the assumption that the way to catch tax fraud is to hire tens of thousands of auditors to look through paper tax returns by hand is insane

what i am trying to get at here is that rationalism was an attempt to outline what turned out to be the extraordinary power of statistical systems at tasks for which they naively seem unsuited. viewed from 2011 they seem to have been prophetic, but were wrong on most details and insane about others

I don't even think most people know that Patient Zero was a fake term invented by the media when they misread Patient O (as in Outside) as Patient 0 and then constructed an entirely fictional homophobic narrative around it that most people still accept as the truth.

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

My favorite book, Charles Perrow's "Normal Accidents", more or less agrees. It's been a while since I read it, but IIRC he points out a major advantage aviation has over other dangerous technologies is the sheer number of repeats -- zillions of take offs and landings per day is a rich data set!
