I had thought that in the 40 minute since I posted this it would have gone viral. I'm honestly a bit disappointed.

Som say the world will end in evites, Some promotions. From what I've seen of desperate hosts, I think evites are favored most. But if I can have two world-end notions, I think I know enough of ads To say I also hate promotions And think we've got it coming From that or many other of our bads.

This is correct and important. Shame is democratic - it's a horizontal sanction rather than a top-down one. The more we reduce the role of coercive authority in the world, the more we will depend on shame and mockery to enforce social norms.

Pulled all these off the grapevine this morning. (And of course there were lots more that got away.) I am starting to get a bit concerned.

It’s awesome that the economy is being driven by people who simultaneously have no idea how human cognition works but are 103% convinced they have duplicated it in artificial form.

Question for any historians (or historian-like people) on here: Any recommended articles about the 19th century US Populists' thinking on money and banking? I've read Lawrence Goodwyn and Michael Kazin. But there must be lots of more recent stuff. Thanks!

There is exactly one large, well funded organization in NYC that makes me feel unsafe specifically as a Jewish person, and it’s the ADL
•@NYCMayor Mamdani's antisemitism strategy finally landed and only confirms what we already knew: this mayor does not treat the hate facing Jewish New Yorkers as an emergency and refuses to acknowledge the different shapes it takes. Since he took office 271 days ago, ADL has recorded hundreds of antisemitic incidents in NYC, nearly 40% of which were related to Israel.
After throwing out the IHRA definition on his first day in office, nine months later, his signature strategy still refuses to replace it with any working definition of antisemitism. He has looked the other way as flags glorifying terror groups have been flown outside synagogues, a deliberate act meant to intimidate families walking in to pray, and as crowds gathered outside houses of worship voicing support for the same groups. At the same time, he continues prioritizing his anti-Israel agenda over the basic promises he made to Jewish New Yorkers.

None of the cheerleaders of the Permitting Reform bill are talking about the fact that it establishes a 150-day statute of limitations for lawsuits under *any* federal law challenging authorizations for coal, oil, and gas extraction. Forever. 150 days is no time at all.

Really enjoying Molly Crabapple's Here Where We Live Is Our Country. It's a book that works very well as an audiobook. (Tho the reader does make some odd choices, like putting on a heavy accent for quotes from Russian and pronouncing the p in coup- which gets more noticeable once we get to the 20s.)

We’re hearing a lot of this sort of thing lately and I don’t agree with it. Defending fundamental human rights is not a “distraction.” The big error is thinking that there a fixed quantity of political engagement, such that solidarity with one group means doing less on something else.

Rereading this, I have to say: This is a good post. It's funny how some things you write get a lot of readers and other things, that you put a lot more work into and seem to be doing something useful and timely, get almost no readers at all. Well, maybe now a few more people on here will see this.

🤔 At the moment, Mamdani is not taking big shots on climate/jobs. Nor is he taking the (small/med) shots he said he would. NYC is a global leader on climate/jobs action b/c of Local Laws 97, 154 & divestment. Policies he inherited. So far Zohran isn’t furthering the city’s leadership. He should!🧵

This kind of hovers around what I wrote about the data center protest. It is not so much against AI/Data centers, the average person couldn't tell you fuck all of what happens at a data center. They just happen to be the tipping point of a quarter century of anxiety where the rich have gotten richer

What’s funny about it this is that a carbon tax has not been central to Dem climate policy since the Obama administration. This conversation a from a decade ago is exactly what led to the idea of the Green New Deal.

While you can't predict every consequence, less U.S. influence over foreign affairs and less ability to coerce others into submission is certainly a positive thing. Will others have to step up and might they fail to? Yes. But we need to let go of our mania and pretense of control
