Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

One day I hope to convince conservatives that we should enforce the rule of law, reduce the deficit, and not carelessly tear down the institutions prior generations built, but today is not that day.

It cut funding to IRS because the assumption that the way to catch tax fraud is to hire tens of thousands of auditors to look through paper tax returns by hand is insane

what i am trying to get at here is that rationalism was an attempt to outline what turned out to be the extraordinary power of statistical systems at tasks for which they naively seem unsuited. viewed from 2011 they seem to have been prophetic, but were wrong on most details and insane about others

I don't even think most people know that Patient Zero was a fake term invented by the media when they misread Patient O (as in Outside) as Patient 0 and then constructed an entirely fictional homophobic narrative around it that most people still accept as the truth.

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

The entire point of civilization is that suffering does not have to be hereditary. Your parents’ misery is not a debt subsequent generations owe them, it is information that tells us where the world failed them, so that we may build one that fails fewer people.

STOP USING FLOATS

binary data was not supposed to have decimal parts!
Years of compiler development, yet no real-world use found for anything other than char and int!
Wanted to use decimal numbers anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: it was called FIXED-POINT ARITHMETIC
"x==x can be FALSE!", "1/0 is a number", "the sum of 1/10 and 2/10 is 0.30000004 - statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged

LOOK at what floating point numbers have demanding your respect for all this time, with all the circutis and data types with built for them

"Hello, I want to knof if f is a real number and less than -1 please?" "Sure that'll be f!=f?0:-1/0.f==f||f==-1.f/0?0:-1f>f"

THEY HAVE PLAYED US FOR ABSOLUTE FOOLS

Skull Panda's Bad Dream
We see a shot of a bunch of people standing around a grave in the rain, looking sad. The tombstone reads "Skull Panda".

Suddenly, we cut to a shot of Skull Panda sitting up with a start, like he has woken up from a nightmare. He relaxes, as he thinks it was all a dream.

We then zoom out to see that Skull Panda is not in bed. He is, in fact, in the grave that we saw earlier, and has partly risen out of the dirt. A frightened man hits him with a shovel.
