I find it strange that some people refuse to believe this is the way our decentralised culture works now, that it's possible to be completely ignorant of hugely popular things that don't match your tastes and interests. People aren't lying about that because they think it makes them look cool.

Exactly this. Punishing them *now* by (eg) demotion to non-league, 115 points deduction, five year ban from professional divisions, whatever, would be far more appropriate.

Just checked the NYT list of best telly of the 2000s. Surprised to find I’ve watched at least one episode of 34 of them and seen the whole show from beginning to end for 16. Far higher than anticipated, although of the top twenty, I’ve seen 8, completed 5.

Relatedly: More could be done under existing legislation against platforms that host videos of criminal activity and individuals or organisations who profit from posting videos of crimes they & their members commit. This is also relevant to curbing stuff like dangerous driving video content.

Whoever advised Gordon Brown to apologise to that bigoted woman in 2010 instead of doubling down on his original remark should be sent to The Hague. So much of what is wrong with the UK today is a result of that initial craven pandering to ‘legitimate concerns’ that were nothing of the sort.

Following a policeman’s visit to tell our primary school assembly about road safety, the deputy head unfathomably decided to sing his own adaption of the song from Pirates of Penzance – sample lyric: ‘PC Hunting’s lot must be a happy one (happy one)’ – while the mortified cop stood there listening.

One assembly, a girl tried to read out something she’d written, only for the mic to emit a horrid drone of feedback instead. Cue laughter from the audience, tears and a hasty withdrawal from the speaker, and castigation of the guffawing onlookers by a teacher: ‘You have the intelligence of a GNAT!’

Every time I hear a politician (usually a Labour cabinet member) say, ‘we’re not going to relitigate Brexit’, I want to scream. We should be grovelling to the EU to have us back. Pathetic that the country is still governed solely for the benefit of Daily Mail editorials and brainwashed pensioners.

Why are films so visually atrocious l these days? That trailer for Pitt/Dog or whatever it’s called just looks awful, saturated with colour, over sharpened, clunky FX shots, every frame cluttered … an utter lack of believability. How do audiences buy into something so abrasive on the eyes?

Wretchedly awful from Liverpool again. There have been signs elsewhere of Iraola’s ideas and philosophy seeping into their play, but today is like watching the worst of the Slot era. Lethargic, error-strewn, petulant and a distinct lack of grit or passion.

What a fucking world where I find myself writing letters like this to my MP.
Letter to my MP:

Dear Fleur Anderson,

I am writing regarding the shocking scenes of masked far-right thugs blocking ports in Dover and, somehow more shockingly, forcing a Portsmouth RNLI station to close.

These scenes are horrific. Equally horrific is the rhetoric from some MPs and the press that these people have "reasonable concerns".

Just Stop Oil protestors have been swiftly stopped and arrested. The crux of their campaign is to ensure that the planet remains in a condition that is livable for humans. The existential threat of climate change is one of the most reasonable concerns one can imagine. Yet they were arrested and decried in the press.

Protestors opposing the genocide in Gaza have been equally swiftly arrested, with some even being proscribed as terrorist organisations. For opposing an ongoing genocide that has killed over 69,000 people - including 17,000 children - according to The British Red Cross. Stopping this appalling violence is another incredibly reasonable concern. Yet they are arrested and decried in the press, while others are proscribed as terrorists.

Preventing saving the lives of desperate people fleeing unsafe conditions is in no way a reasonable concern, yet MPs and the press talk about these masked thugs, preventing lives from being saved and swarming areas of key infrastructure, as having reasonable concerns. This is a shocking stain on this country.

Continued in next imageLetter continues: Migration is a net good for the country, even before you take into account the ageing workforce. The anti-migrant rhetoric comes from dangerous and violent men, and is spurred on by a press that thrives on outrage.

All human lives have equal value. Anyone preventing a lifeboat station - a lifeboat station! - from operating and saving human lives should be arrested and charged far more quickly than an elderly vicar sitting quietly and holding a sign.

I urge you to use your power as an MP to speak out on this. To call these balaclava-wearing men what they are: violent, masked thugs who speak only for a tiny, hateful minority. These are not reasonable concerns of patriots. These are the words and deeds of vicious people who want to fracture this country.

By way of reply, please confirm that you will raise this issue in parliament, and use your power to speak out against this disturbing rise of fascist violence.

Yours sincerely,

Guy Kelly

There’s a major overlap between technocrats who want a science fiction world, but have taken all the wrong lessons from sci-fi, and far-right guys who are nostalgic for a past that didn’t exist, but they don’t know because they don’t read enough history. Ignorance is a cultural identity now.
