Breakfast in college is silent and a number of people bring some suitable book to read to avoid the temptation to scroll. I’m not sure if Don Camillo counts as spiritual reading or not, but I am enjoying it.

When UK police made a public request for people not to share the footage, they probably hadn’t counted on their request being effectively overridden by the President of the USA, whose brain is so irretrievably broken that he can’t comprehend for a moment why that might be a bad idea

Straight out of the “Dune” films? Not really: this spectacular sunset scene took place in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, and in the distance you can spot the domes of our Very Large Telescope. Discover more: www.eso.org/public/image... 🔭 #flashback
A person standing on rocky terrain in the foreground and a mountain range in the background. Two peaks are visible, one in the centre of the image and another one farther to the right. On each of them are astronomical observatories. The photo was taken during the sunset. Image by S. Lowery/ESO.

There’s really only one way to mark the 99th anniversary of Roger Moore’s birth
Marc Haynes’ story: As a 7 year old in about 1983, … I was with my grandad in Nice Airport and saw Roger Moore Sitting at the departure gate, ... told my granddad i'd just seen James Bond and asked if we could go over so I could get his autograph. …so we walked over and he popped me in front of Roger Moore, with the words "my grandson says you're famous. Can you sign this?" As charming as you'd expect, Roger asks my name and signs the back of my plane ticket... I'm ecstatic, but …I glance down at the signature. … it definitely doesn't say 'James Bond'. ...I tell my grandad he's signed it wrong, … so my grandad heads back to Roger Moore...
"he says you've signed the wrong name. He says your name is James Bond." Roger Moore's face crinkled up with realisation and he beckoned me over. …he leant over, looked from side to side, raised an eyebrow and in a hushed voice said "I have to sign my name as 'Roger Moore because otherwise...Blofeld might find out I was here." He asked me not to tell anyone …and thanked me for keeping his secret. I went back to our seats, my nerves absolutely jangling with delight. My grandad asked me if he'd signed 'James Bond.' No, I said.
I'd got it wrong. I was working with James Bond now. Many years later, I was working on a recording that involved UNICEF, and Roger Moore was doing a piece to camera as an ambassador. He was lovely and while the cameramen were setting up, I told him the story. He …had a chuckle and said "Well, I don't remember but I'm glad you got to meet James Bond." So that was lovely. And then he did something so brilliant. After the filming, he walked past me in the corridor, heading out to his car - but as he got level, he paused looked both ways, raised an eyebrow and in a hushed voice said, "Of course I remember our meeting in Nice. But I didn't say anything in there, because those cameramen - any one of them could be working for Blofeld."
I was as delighted at 30 as I had been at 7. What a man. What a tremendous man.

The scars of a fire in 1486 are still visible inside St Peter’s Church, Wolferton, Norfolk. The medieval stone arches and pillars remain reddened by the heat. Almost 400 years later, the future King Edward VII paid for the church’s restoration in 1886. #Wolferton #Norfolk #AerialPhotography

The boss of the French supermarket chain should be really REALLY concerned about the fact that the freezers were running on software that hadn't been patched since the dawn of time. tbh it's a bloody miracle they hadn't been taken down before.

Was watching Buffy’s Anya backstory episode. Friend asked why I sighed. “She’s not of a sufficiently high social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north in Europe in that century, but the writers couldn’t know, the paper was only presented at a conference yesterday.” Accuracy is fleeting.

Having Russian involvement being common knowledge gives some Leave voters an easy climb down - they can blame Cameron for failing to notice and stop it. For the rest, it's best to focus on the future and say Johnson stuffed up the deal and we need to renegotiate to benefit the economy.

I have stood in the gallows chamber in Mountjoy. I am part of the last generation of lawyers in this State that will have practised with people whose clients faced the risk of that being the last place they saw on this earth. The death penalty is an obscenity that no civilised state should accept.

I always say that both Londoners and those who live in the regions underestimate the city's size, in relation to the rest of the UK. If London's municipal cycle hire scheme were a city, for example, then it would be the third largest city in England. (if membership became citizenship)

Sometimes you need to give people who've done something fucking idiotic an excuse to change their mind. ESPECIALLY if you warned them it was fucking idiotic. And if it was an emotive choice. you have to decide whether you value them walking it back over catharsis. Applies in work, love or Brexit.
