Andre Geim is the only scientist to win both the Nobel Prize (Physics, 2010) and the Ig Nobel Prize (for levitating a frog in 2000). His secret? He says it was to set up an environment in his lab for doing experiments from a sense of play and a spirit for adventure!

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

As habitual AI user for writing who regularly sees "100% human" scores on text with 80%+ LLM-written words, I suspect that: (i) reliability of AI detection is overestimated, (ii) writing of latest-gen models is under-appreciated, and (iii) "LLM-generated" is not as clear cut as many people think

I'm not writing in the NYT and I won't word it carefully: it's clear that AI companies are stealing researchers' work (and why wouldn't they? they steal artists' and journalists' work with no consequences), and I warned my group about it this morning.

Also I am obsessed that "fluorescence" was coined in the footnote of Stokes 1852 paper. He was like -- if opalescence can be named after opals, why not name this glowing after fluorspar? And I think that is cool royalsocietypublishing.org/rstl/article...
A screenshot from On the change of refrangibility of light by Stokes. Page 15 of the document. He says, " I confess I do not like this term (dispersive reflexion) I am almost inclined to coin a word and call the appearence fluorescence from fluor-spar, as the analagos term opalescence is derived from the name of a mineral.

There's a missing rung on the academic career ladder in Austria and Germany. Historically there wasn't a position like assistant professor or lecturer, so the jump from postdoc to professor was — and mostly still is — huge. Between 70% and 80% of academics in Austria don't have permanent jobs.

He tells her that the earth is flat —
He knows the facts, and that is that.
In altercations fierce and long
She tries her best to prove him wrong.
But he has learned to argue well.
He calls her arguments unsound
And often asks her not to yell.
She cannot win. He stands his ground.
