Is it Amsterdam? Copenhagen? No, it's Paris! After years of investment, the French capital has one of the best problems a city can have: bicycle congestion. So if Paris has done it, why wouldn't other cities follow? 📸 Such an amazing photo by @jbpssx.bsky.social

I'm not writing in the NYT and I won't word it carefully: it's clear that AI companies are stealing researchers' work (and why wouldn't they? they steal artists' and journalists' work with no consequences), and I warned my group about it this morning.

Tempted to use AI to write your cover letter or email to a potential employer? RESIST! It is simultaneously obvious, insulting, and renders you totally undifferentiated from the other 80 people being considered t the same time. Also I am obsessed that "fluorescence" was coined in the footnote of Stokes 1852 paper. He was like -- if opalescence can be named after opals, why not name this glowing after fluorspar? And I think that is cool royalsocietypublishing.org/rstl/article...
A screenshot from On the change of refrangibility of light by Stokes. Page 15 of the document. He says, " I confess I do not like this term (dispersive reflexion) I am almost inclined to coin a word and call the appearence fluorescence from fluor-spar, as the analagos term opalescence is derived from the name of a mineral.

There's a missing rung on the academic career ladder in Austria and Germany. Historically there wasn't a position like assistant professor or lecturer, so the jump from postdoc to professor was — and mostly still is — huge. Between 70% and 80% of academics in Austria don't have permanent jobs.

He tells her that the earth is flat —
He knows the facts, and that is that.
In altercations fierce and long
She tries her best to prove him wrong.
But he has learned to argue well.
He calls her arguments unsound
And often asks her not to yell.
She cannot win. He stands his ground.

Academics don't like being told that they live in an Ivory Tower, but I have to say, only people who have spent practically their whole life within the security of tenured employment could come up with such a cruel solution. There are more equitable ways to solve the low success rate problem.
