Like the trans panic happening now, and the MMR panic before it - a bunch of dubious science and disgruntled idealogical bigotry is given mainstream platform, the conversation is shifted, and by the time it’s debunked, a problem we were on our way to solving is rocketed back 40 years.

I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Meta now lets anyone use your Instagram photos in AI images without your consent. SAG-AFTRA recommends that #SagAftraMembers (and all Instagram users) opt-OUT of Meta’s new AI image generation tool, Muse Image. Take action to protect your likeness.
If you want to avoid AI generations of your Instagram posts without switching your account to private, you’ll have to dig into the app’s settings. Open the Instagram app, tap your profile, and then tap the three lines in the top-right corner of the screen. Then, scroll down to the Sharing and reuse tab. Here is where you should see a section labeled Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta, with a toggle for Posts and one for Reels.

The fact that people are making jokes about this is sickening. It's not funny when someone dies or almost dies. McConnell has long-struggled with autoerotic asphyxiation and was found by the police with a belt around his neck and his erect penis in his hand. It's not a fucking joke.
Sen. Mitch McConnell was found unconscious when rushed to the hospital.

Deus Ex, a sci-fi masterpiece, was released 26 years ago today! Do you know what that means? It means we're halfway through the time span between the release of this cyberpunk game, 2000, and the events depicted in its story, which takes place in 2052. 😎
The video game cover for "Deus Ex" features a man with dark hair, wearing futuristic goggles, looking upwards with a beam of bright light shining down on his face from above. His head and shoulders are visible against a dark, futuristic cityscape silhouette with several tall buildings and flying vehicles. The game's title, "Deus Ex," is written in a stylized, metallic, and somewhat cyberpunk font at the top of the image, illuminated by a white glow.

Don’t ban kids using YouTube. Make YouTube behave like a broadcaster. Pay creators. Reinvest in the creative industries. Pay fair tax back into creators’ economies. Follow guidelines on fair usage and copyright. Play fair. It’s bigger than TV now. Make it behave like TV.

Keir Starmer: I respect the founder of The Mloly Rose Foundation and the tragic event that led to the creation of this charity for suicide prevention and safer online environments Also Keir Starmer: Guess I'll just ignore the views or recommendations put forward by the Molly Rose Foundation.
Screenshot from The Guardian:
At his press conference, and in his interview on ITV’s This Morning, Keir Starmer stressed his respect for Ian Russell, whose daughter Molly died aged 14 after seeing harmful content online. The Molly Rose Foundation was set up in her memory.

Its chief executive, Andy Burrows, has just released this statement about the announcement this morning.

The prime minister has chosen to gamble on an unenforceable social media ban that will quickly unravel. When that happens parents and children will ask why he chose not to follow the evidence but take the politically expedient option instead.

A social media ban will fail to tackle fundamental product safety risks issues and leaves parents with a false sense of safety. A majority of children will continue to use high risk sites that will have no incentive to implement robust protections.

This is not what online safety experts believe will work and is necessary. Keir Starmer has chosen to abdicate responsibility for tackling harmful algorithms and his legacy will be setting back children’s safety by years.

Mandatory age verification and the banning modern public towns squares for young people is, and forever will be, governmental and societal abdication of responsibility so that those in charge don't actually have to dare hold big tech accountable for the very real public harm they can foster.

Not to mention part of the reason children's programming shifted so much from broadcast to online is because previous government bans (on junk food ads) massively reduced the commercial viability of kids TV.

I lived through the 'video nasties' debacle, my political awakening - the first time I realised some of the people 'in charge' (police, MPs, doctors, etc) were either stupid or dishonest, or both. It led to the Video Recordings Act, a bogus piece of filth which remains on statute to this very day.

Having worked in government on these knee jerk moralistic policies, 100% of the time the answer is not technology, since kids are cleverer than parents. It’s actually about parental responsibilities and the fact that we’ve got a load of useless parents out there.
