CITY SCAFFOLD: A sonnet of no fixed rhyme scheme, composed in iambic trimeter. Each line has exactly 14 letters. The poem's Ts are arranged such that they form a symmetrical, X-shaped scaffold.

y’all don’t go looking for this but. one thing I really wish everyone would internalise is that we’re not gonna win against the puritans, or the fascists, or anyone else, by accepting any part of their premise as valid. they do not have legit concerns

Few things as guaranteed to send me into absolutely incandescent rage as mean, cruel, and frankly ignorant comments on social media aimed at people who are formula feeding a baby (something for which there can, of course, be a multitude of reasons, none of which are anybody’s business)

Starting a new semester so I'm gearing up for responses to students who want to use AI "just for research." My response to this is to try and recalibrate what the student thinks research is. It isn't just having a specific question or set of questions and setting out to find answers. 1/

A drawing of a chicken, side view. At the top of the image it says “Chicken Game”. Underneath that, just above the chicken’s head, it says “Don’t look at this chicken”. Over the chicken appear the words “GAME OVER”

This is incredibly sad news. I speak from personal experience here that if you are a man over 50 who has symptoms don’t delay, don’t be embarrassed. Go immediately to your GP and don’t take no for an answer. Get a PSA test AND a physical examination. It isn’t pleasant but the alternative is worse.

The thing is that, however much money you have, you are going to have to confront the human reality that there are more things in life you can't control than things you can. my guess is, that this becomes more difficult to accept the more money you have. You can control small things...

My hottest mental health take: A lot of depression and anxiety is situational, and warranted, because people live in shit circumstances. They’re poor, without resources, etc. and the reason it’s become popular to blame “mental health” is because it’s a way of evading responsibility.

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain. A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones. The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

The problem is, we don't see what exposure to ideas does to us. The human brain is a machine for rationalising the irrational. It will tell you you're the same person you were a year ago no matter what you've been through. We all think - every single one of us - that we can't be manipulated.

A painting called... The Gatecrasher
Acrylic painting. We see a back wall and the floor leading out from it, both surfaces painted with stripes of white, dark blue, brown, white and light blue. Across the floor scampers a mass of abstract paint; strokes and splats of greens, whites, browns and reds, with two of the strokes at rhe bottom vaguely resembling legs walking along. To the left, in white, the words: oh, look - it's the gatecrasher.

I know it doesn't seem to matter to anyone making these bullshit laws, but for the record, there is still no evidence of any kind that allowing trans people to enter and use the "single sex spaces" appropriate for their actual gender has ever caused a single other law to be broken.

Next time you see someone enjoy something that isn’t hurting anyone but isn’t exactly up your street just learn to think “I’m glad they are happy” and leave them to it. There are much better ways to cope with your shortcomings in life than shitting on a stranger on the internet. Don’t be a cunt.

A screenshot from a Paragraph Planet reading “Today’s 75-word Paragraph.” In a box is blue typewriter style text on white background:

“Deathbed confessions should be more fun. A celebration secrets held close until they spill out in a death rattle. A white elephant-type situation could be a blast. Passing around our regrets and lies in cheesy, crinkly wrapping paper: 'I hated my job! You have an entire missing family out there!' But no, it's me holding her clammy hand in a sterile hospital room, while I wait for my mother to confess she did actually love me.”

If you have never read Novels In Three Lines by Félix Fénéon (brilliantly translated by Luc Sante), you should. It's a collection of 1000+ ultra-minimal News In Brief items Fénéon wrote for the newspaper Le Matin in 1906, boiling down news items to their essence and adding wry commentary.
