My cousin threw "we're all stories in the end" into her speech at my grandmother's memorial. It's truer and less trite than a lot of the things said at these occasions

The fact that the episode ended before the voting started makes me think it was so one-way that they couldn't get a decent cliffhanger out of it. Not even a halfway point "Ooh this is close, which way will it go?"

CITY SCAFFOLD: A sonnet of no fixed rhyme scheme, composed in iambic trimeter. Each line has exactly 14 letters. The poem's Ts are arranged such that they form a symmetrical, X-shaped scaffold.

Hello. I'm a person who has vital evidence that could identify the killer, and the killer knows this. Instead of telling the detective over the phone, I instead ask him to come to my house in an hour to find me dead

y’all don’t go looking for this but. one thing I really wish everyone would internalise is that we’re not gonna win against the puritans, or the fascists, or anyone else, by accepting any part of their premise as valid. they do not have legit concerns

Few things as guaranteed to send me into absolutely incandescent rage as mean, cruel, and frankly ignorant comments on social media aimed at people who are formula feeding a baby (something for which there can, of course, be a multitude of reasons, none of which are anybody’s business)

And even if motorists are inclined to run red lights whenever possible (and obviously plenty are), once the first car has stopped no more are getting through. Whereas any number of cyclists can sweep past

Starting a new semester so I'm gearing up for responses to students who want to use AI "just for research." My response to this is to try and recalibrate what the student thinks research is. It isn't just having a specific question or set of questions and setting out to find answers. 1/

Morning
A drawing of a chicken, side view. At the top of the image it says “Chicken Game”. Underneath that, just above the chicken’s head, it says “Don’t look at this chicken”. Over the chicken appear the words “GAME OVER”

I thought the same thing. He's got nothing left to achieve except the seemingly impossible. Also plausible that Pogacar completes his set with this year's Vuelta and dedicates the rest of his career to chasing 5 monuments in a season. Grand Tours could be about to get a lot less predictable...

This is incredibly sad news. I speak from personal experience here that if you are a man over 50 who has symptoms don’t delay, don’t be embarrassed. Go immediately to your GP and don’t take no for an answer. Get a PSA test AND a physical examination. It isn’t pleasant but the alternative is worse.

Absolutely. In not trying to compete with the bigger performances, Keating is, in his own way, just as compelling. And full marks for not playing Vila as the snivelling wretch Terry Nation presumably thought he was writing

The thing is that, however much money you have, you are going to have to confront the human reality that there are more things in life you can't control than things you can. my guess is, that this becomes more difficult to accept the more money you have. You can control small things...

True. How about "almost entirely bought rather than predominantly streamed"?

Nick Lord Lancaster @nlordlancaster.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
Yeah, the "is this worth buying" review is largely pointless now. The more intellectual/analytical/pretentious review that OP seems to value is probably as relevant as it ever was. If I read reviews these days it's of things I've already heard, to see if they agree with me

Back when albums were bought rather than streamed, it would have been pretty shit for sales if everyone waited years to find out whether something was worth buying. And who says your opinion after a certain time is any more valid? It'll probably change again later

My hottest mental health take: A lot of depression and anxiety is situational, and warranted, because people live in shit circumstances. They’re poor, without resources, etc. and the reason it’s become popular to blame “mental health” is because it’s a way of evading responsibility.

Rhythm. And unambiguous communication of whatever the writer wanted to communicate. Obviously anything can be mangled by the reader's brain, and writing can be deliberately unclear or ambiguous, but "deliberate" is the key word there. Good writing knows what it is doing

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain. A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones. The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...
