I did not realise how delightfully odd The Bee Gees were (even having seen Cucumber Castle). And by the time we got to the saddest-sounding Coke jingle ever, what was there not to love? A really entertaining episode and this song is brilliant youtu.be/ZpQa4wRlMf4?...

I know Gadsden is doing a bit here, but it does overlap nicely with something Andrew Hickey said in the latest @500songspodcast.bsky.social, with which I completely agree
(This should not be taken as a criticism, incidentally. In general, rock music criticism tends to treat lyrics as far more important than they actually are, because rock writers are writers and know about words, but are usually not musicians. But the criterion for a song lyric should never be how it reads on the page, but how it sounds as part of a record, and however incoherent the lyrics are on the page, they generally work. The Bee Gees were not trying to be Dylan and shouldn't be judged by the same criteria.)

One thing I love about @500songspodcast.bsky.social is that you literally can't predict where an episode will begin or where it will go. The episode I'm up to - 146, on Good Vibrations - starts with a literal history of the word 'song' and an attempt to raise Lenin as a zombie.

@500songspodcast.bsky.social latest bonus episode is on the Bee Gees prior to their 70s era, and it boggles my mind that they had several Top 20 US singles and I maaaaaaaybe recognize one of them, maybe. A run of successful songs that sound nothing like their more famous work. And didn't stick.

You can’t understand the story of rock music without following the main and side plots together. For example, I don’t even WANT to know about Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart without the proper context of the accompanying episodes on the GTOs and The Banana Splits. That’s how good this is.

I’ve been a supporter for a while now and I have to say that the bonus episodes are some of the best things Andrew has done. He covers a lot of British bands that American listeners may not know much about and as an extra treat you get to hear about Rod Stewart not getting to join even more groups.

I've heard the name Captain Beefheart a lot in my life. And I never knew what to make of it. Learning so much more hasn't filled that mental hole. But what a story. And I love how he and Zappa, and Arthur Lee & Johnny Echols to a lesser degree, had touches of a Lennon/McCartney shared origin story.
