Wendy Carlos should be on the 20 dollar bill. There should be a 50-foot-tall, solid-gold statue of her in Pawtucket. You should be able to buy all her albums in any format you want and a line of custom branded synths. She should be a household name along with Bob Moog.

Proud to be a designated spokesperson for the anti-AI humanist movement in this excellent @newyorker.com piece. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
Paragraph from linked New Yorker article reads: This is not A.I. populism, as Sun describes it, so much as anti-A.I. humanism; its champions worry about what would be left if human pursuits became pointless. I was struck by how many A.I. skeptics converged on the same formulation: what is this activity for? When I called Lila Byock, a mother of two and the founder of Schools Beyond Screens, a coalition fighting the influence of big tech in schools, she said, “I think that we just need to ask ourselves, like, what is school for? What is education for? One of the really basic problems with using A.I. in education is that it is designed to make tasks easier and to reduce friction, and friction is how learning happens.”

Almost done with the basic framing here I think…special areas for records, cds, cassettes, and various musical instruments…hifi shelf lower middle…lower right will be a built-in stand for several guitars, I need to research the best way to do that. Next task is squirrelproofing…boring

So much of schools "responding to rape" is preventing the legal system from doing so. This is a report on seven adults who committed serious felonies for which there is a legal system to remind them and their pals that they are felonies.

Today’s task was to get started on a bookcase, once I confirmed its supporting wall was squirrel-free. There will be many bespoke compartments for various items, and it is also intended as a sound diffuser. Gotta stop now but will resume after sukkot, the holiday where you construct an outbuilding!

I am trying to get through another celebrated new crime novel that would be great if the protagonist weren’t perpetually explaining the plot and themes to themselves in their head. Why are editors allowing this? Prestige crime fiction is now AAA Mario

Also, you can snail-mail us anytime but keep in mind our editors' reading periods are Feb-Mar and Sept-Oct. If you submit in April or November you might not hear for a long time, unless our EIC gets some free time to clear the decks. (If he likes it, he'll save it for the next reading period)

Hello, a couple of notes about submissions! First, we are getting a lot of snail-mail subs without SASE included, and also a lot of emails asking why we haven't responded to subs sent last year. These are correlated! We really need the SASE or a stamped postcard if you want a response.

2026 #94 I was came across this, the first novel from @jrobertlennon.com a few days ago in a second-hand bookshop and found myself reading it next day. This story of how an airline crash affects a varied group; witnesses, survivor, relatives of the dead; is a most assured debut. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #booksky
The Light of Falling Stars, by J. Robert Lennon.

A plane falls from the sky as a couple argue in their backyard; the whine of its engines drowning out there voices, part of the aircraft shearing through the roof of their house. A few miles away in the airport a young man anxiously awaits the arrival of his girlfriend, while in a long-empty house an old woman nervously anticipates the reappearance of a husband who left her many years before.
Two days later, a stranger appears at the home of the couple who watched the plane go down, saying only that he has come from Italy to begin a new life. He is the sole survivor of the disaster, although he mysteriously chooses not to reveal this, or anything of his past. He witnesses the disintegration of the couples marriage - the recent tragedy hastening its end - and befriends the husband who is increasingly adrift in the wake of his wife's decision to leave.
The author depicts the lives of those affected by the crash as they struggle to re-establish themselves and imagine a changed future, each undergoing a transformation - some for the better, others for the worse. A fine debut.

As a Jewish person who has long been concerned about antisemitism, I think it’s fucking bananas that Republicans’ biggest donor is a neo-Nazi and that’s not really a political scandal—but we’re constantly talking about whether my friends on the left have a problem.
