i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

Humans have produced reams of stupid and bad fiction in the past and they will continue to do so in the future At least human-produced stupid and bad sometimes has heart and/or insight into the author's baffling neuroses

tonight on "crossfire": fake dating trope

"fake dating" is the most realistic romance narrative trope, because in all of our interpersonal relationships, we are always performing. the other is forever unknowable, because the self is unknowable.

you fool, "fake dating" is the least realistic trope, because in performance we find our truth.

This semiotic overabundance is in part an effect of how AI models are trained and optimized to match textual prompts. But it's also a worldbuilding technique. In slopaganda-world, every visible element has an unambiguous meaning, and they all reinforce each other, creating a kind of echo chamber

My team at the NVA Lab has produced a new dashboard for exploring our data on US protests from Jan 2025-May 2026. This snapshot shows the 61k+ protest events (>14.6M+ recorded participants) active in the US since Trump's second inauguration. Link to dashboard in thread.
A platform displaying the data on US protests from the Crowd Counting Consortium. It includes a map of the US with counts of protest events in circular form overlaying the protests' locations. It also includes weekly tallies of protest events and participations, top protest issues, and various filters allowing users to explore events by location, issue, date, political valence, etc. The top of the image shows a total of 61,782 protests with 14,684,201 participants across 55 US states and territories from January 20, 2025 to May 31, 2026.

There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

I talk a lot about how I think a lot of writers need to build up their technical skills, but something I think might actually be more important is developing a capacity to sincerely enjoy your own work, for its own sake but also bc that is what allows you to refine a creative sensibility.

Once again, I gotta say: you cannot treat anything you’re feeding into an AI as anonymous. There are enormous ethics implications for, e.g. referees who are clearly uploading others’ unpublished papers without consent, let alone health care professionals or law enforcement

So anyway I'm VERY CURIOUS to see what Amazon looks like in a few weeks now that there's a tighter publishing limit. I want to be optimistic but I'll settle for curious.

Hopefully this will stem the flood of low-effort books without inconveniencing authors too much. And I wouldn't trust Amazon (or most anyone) to use any measure that relied on AI detection. I do hope the limit doesn't drop much further, though.

A classic Safety-II example (“what went right”). There is a lot of talk a lot about how bad humans are and how automated systems can be safer, more reliable, more resilient, etc but the truth is that so often the human has a better model of what’s really going on and intervenes to ensure safety

In Grand Central Terminal, Leon Chang, 26, of Brooklyn, said he had not heard of congestion pricing and asked what it was. When explained it was a toll for cars entering Manhattan, he then asked
"What do you mean? What is a car?" Walking outside, we showed him a vehicle parked on the street. He gently touched the hood of the car. "You wish to forbid these majestic beasts from entering the city," he said in a wistful tone. It is a folly of man. The desire to tame the world around us."

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.
