Truth and reconciliation commissions are only one transitional justice tool among many. They only work under very specific conditions, and often fail. Transitional justice is a complicated field, and when done wrong tends to blow up in your face. It’s an important conversation that requires care.

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.

I have to curate my feed more carefully now. My follower count has grown a bit, but I’m still a very small fish in this pond, so that hasn’t changed the experience much (complimentary). I think the big change is that people are more frustrated, scared, and angry. But that’s true offline as well.

A Saw-Whet Owl is pouched in a cotton draw-string bag in the hands of a bander. She looks directly at camera with eyes yellow and wide: one eye lit from above-left, the other occluded in shadow. Feathers are muted brown with streaks of cream-white radiating from the eyes. The pouch is white with light blue stripes like the Uruguayan flag (1828-1830). In the background atop a wooden desk and out of focus is a chart with bars of yellow - likely for registering the hue of each banded owl's eyes as part of the migration research.

Three identical pouches are strung from a horizontal cord, affixed with wooden clothes pegs like garments on a washing line. The pouches, I think it's safe to assume, are laden with one Saw-Whet Owl each. Some trust has been placed in the springs of the pegs, given that these little goobers typically weigh around 80 grams or 2.8 ounces. For reference that's the weight of a very small banana, or a hefty lemon, but those things rarely try to escape once put in a bag.

Without getting too partisan, I think it’s important to keep in mind that as political corruption gets more common in any given system, less and less effort goes into hiding it. The fact that this particular scheme was so sloppy and obvious says a lot about the ubiquity of US political corruption.
