I think part of what makes me feel so insane about genre fans saying that litic is just about professors having affairs is that in there are so, so many examples in classic genre fiction of middle aged male leads sleeping with their assistants/alien princesses/elven maidens.

I talk a lot about how I think a lot of writers need to build up their technical skills, but something I think might actually be more important is developing a capacity to sincerely enjoy your own work, for its own sake but also bc that is what allows you to refine a creative sensibility.
