NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

The judge let the victim's brother show an AI generated avatar of her brother that she claimed was him addressing the court from beyond the grave. The judge gushed about how powerful it was. Thankfully, the defendant is going to be resentenced.

It’s an honor every time. I hope more medical schools continue to find ways to include diverse medical histories (by historians not just practitioners) in their curriculum. The students get so much out of it and we historians are so happy when our work reaches them.

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.

I actually can’t get past the first sentence of this opinion piece: “Most college professors I know believe that students learn to think — critically, creatively, reflectively, tenaciously — only by writing.” This simply isn’t true, at least not in my experience, and it sets up quite the straw man.

Developing research skills means not jumping to conclusions based on one piece of evidence. A competent researcher cross-checks evidence, looks for context, and interrogates their own biases. And we certainly don’t shoehorn evidence into a predetermined conclusion. Talking to you, Eric Schmidt.
