🚨 Today is the date of my first solo publication. 🚨 You'd expect seasoned organizers to be the quickest to turn broad public support into electoral engagement. But in 2020, it was newer organizers who pushed their supporters toward electoral politics.

AI polls can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes, a new @pewresearch.org study shows. An experimental AI poll found that 97% of Hispanic adults in the US were likely to follow the World Cup. The actual figure – based on human respondents – was 43%. www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...

This is extremely reassuring for the future health of American democracy. Had this been a permanent realignment with some Latinos, especially Mexican-Americans, also making the transition into the White racial category that Italians, Slavs and Jews made ~100 years ago, we'd be utterly screwed.

I think there is solid evidence to suggest Latinos will be one of the country's most important swing constituencies over the coming decade. The bigger the group, the harder it is to find common threads to hold them together. Latinos will be one of the kingmakers in American politics moving forward.

Abstract for the paper "The Electoral Effects of U.S. Prison Construction" by Ottone & Weiss: From 1980 to 2000, the United States opened over 400 prisons, a rapid expansion of carceral capacity mirroring the punitive turn in public policy and public opinion. Yet few studies have examined the impact of prison construction on nearby residents and their political behavior. We develop a theoretical model tracing how prison openings affect economic, attitudinal, and electoral outcomes in surrounding communities. Us- ing modern difference-in-difference methods and a novel county-level dataset covering forty years of prison openings, we find that prison construction decreases county-level vote share for Republican candidates, especially if Republicans represented the county during prison construction. Drawing on analyses of economic outcomes and prison bond measure support, we argue that voters sanction issue-owning Republican candi- dates for negative economic externalities and turn against funding for prisons. These findings challenge conventional wisdom about the political economy of prisons and have implications for how we understand contemporary expansions of carceral capacity.

New from me. Using the GSS wordsum vocabulary test (common proxy for cognitive ability), I find lower scores are associated with greater adherence to Christian nationalist views. This is consistent with studies finding lower scores among fundamentalists & authoritarians. 1/4 doi.org/10.1111/jssr...

New working paper. We propose a theory of dynamic identity-based linkages between voters and parties. We base this theory on models of expressive voting where voting signifies joining a community of social groups of voters. People have a sense of which parties are associated with which groups.
