Are you applying to #MPSA and working on countries from East European to Central Asian? Please note that thanks to the efforts spearheaded by Olena Nikolayenko we've successfully renamed section 29 from "(Post) Communist Countries" to "Politics of Eastern Europe and Central Asia"

Do yourself a favor. Read these 7 pages by @lilymasonphd.bsky.social right now. It is the most concise explanation of the current situation in U.S. politics I've seen and it captures why calls to reduce "polarization" can ultimately worsen the problem 🧵 www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/pol...

Polarization Is Not the Problem | Journal of Democracy
Americans have never been angrier with one another. But polarization is not the disease—it is the response to a revanchist movement seeking to roll back sixty years of social progress.

🚨 Today is the date of my first solo publication. 🚨 You'd expect seasoned organizers to be the quickest to turn broad public support into electoral engagement. But in 2020, it was newer organizers who pushed their supporters toward electoral politics.

My belief: This election isn’t about the economy in 2027. It’s about the economy in 2060. Prosperity comes from institutions like the rule of law, markets, a free press, and capitalism (not crony capitalism) newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/…

We Spend So Much Time Talking About Gas Prices
But is that what we really want to focus on? Also: Is the U.S. economy really the envy of the world?

It’s interesting to think about this fake award on the same day that nature published the story on fake academic societies. Billionaires creating new awards for ideological capture and to launder their reputations is also a scam, but its not treated as such and gets a ‘Newsvertisement‘ in the WSJ

Reminder: updated covid and flu shots are now available and waiting for you. I just got mine. I know that messaging from DC has been confusing. Here is what the experts say: www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/202...
The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest the vaccines for most people, including healthy adults ages 18 to 64 and healthy children ages 2 to 18, if their parents want them to get one.

Bugs me that an econ prof is willing to simply assume that professors' political views affect how they teach a subject, and that how they teach affects students' political views. Especially when studies that adjust for selection into unis & courses suggest profs' political ID has no causal effect.

Social sciences colleagues working on more critical topics (e.g., inequality, racism, collective action), how are we thinking about advising our PhD students around the NSF GRFP this cycle? Is it work the effort, any sense whether they will receive fair consideration? A lost cause at the moment?
