Trial of live facial recognition in London stations ends with a false positive and no arrests
Freedom of information request finds six-month trial cost £320,000, used almost 100 police hours and led to just one – incorrect – alert A six-month trial of live facial recognition (LFR) technology in London’s railway stations that cost more than £320,000 and almost 100 hours of police officers’ time ended in one false match against a watchlist of suspects and no arrests. More than half a million faces were scanned between February and July this year in some of the capital’s busiest transport hubs during the British Transport Police (BTP) trial of the surveillance technology, which aimed to help catch offenders and people breaching court orders. Quote from Cory Doctorow article: But what if there was a way for the AI companies to get government permission to violate antitrust law and cease to compete with one another, and secure a ban on the use of Chinese open weight models? Turns out, there is a way to call time on the Red Queen's Race: merely insist that you are on the verge of teaching so many words to the word-guessing program that it will wake up and devour us all, and call for a ban on "superintelligence"

If there's a single graph you need to see to understand the AI extinction debate, it's this. To survive, frontier AI giants need to burn $10 trillion (a tenth of world GDP) over nxt 5 years. But they will only earn $3 trillion - a financial blackhole of $7 trillion. Who is going to go extinct?
Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind will need $10 trillion over next 5 years, but will earn only about $3 trillion.

Reminder that yesterday we learned the concentration camps we detain refugees & asylum seekers in before returning them to France are routinely brutalising them. Our taxes are being used by Labour to torture people to placate racists *who still won't vote for them*
According to the report: "Consultations are revealing signs consistent with recent physical and psychological violence as well as the consequences of prolonged detention in conditions described as particularly degrading." It states that the physical and psychological conditions documented are "explicitly linked to the implementation of the France-British agreement".

How having a disability became cool
Young women, nicknamed ‘sickfluencers’, are turning chronic illness into a lifestyle trend and entrenching a culture of economic inactivity

Young women are also more likely to get caught up in “social contagion” – the spontaneous spread of behaviours or emotions previously observed by sociologists in “outbreaks” of bulimia, self-harm and transgender ideology. What may have otherwise been transitory feelings are seized upon and obsessed over until they form a central pillar of a person’s identity. A chronic-illness influencer won’t want to get “better” any more than a female-bodied transgender person would want to re-identify with their sex.
