If you're at a loose end on a Sunday evening, here's a closer look at some very lovely and multi-layered art I've been spending way too much time examining. Printing Printed Patterns: From kimono to mokuhanga majnouna.substack.com/p/printing-p... #caravanserai #mokuhanga
Image with the title of the piece in the foreground, and a cropped detail from a japanese woodblock print in the background, showing an elegant woman with her arms raised, looking over her shoulder, but without context to explain what she's doing.

The late art historian Lilian Armstrong used this edition to show how illuminators were adapting to the uptake of print. She found lots of illuminated copies of this ed., many of which were finished with a technique that used woodblock stamps to create diagrams that could be painted over by hand
The title page of the BPL copy, which was illuminated fully by hand. Note the flowing shapes and the very thin pen linesA copy of the same edition at the Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University (call no. 06056). Note the heavy outlines of the vines and the rougher details. These borders were produced by an applied/stamped impression from a woodblock, added after printing, then colored in by hand.

Every new tech "wearable" is about sneaking around consent. Corpos know AI surveillance is incredibly unpopular, so their bugs (literally, it's called "Bee") are designed to be discreet. "No one knows you're recording" is a feature. If I catch you with one of these in my lecture, I will destroy it.
Amazon’s personal AI wearable maker, Bee, is announcing its first new products since being acquired by the retail giant last year. The tech company on Thursday introduced the Bee Frontier, the next generation of its device that can be worn on the wrist or pinned to clothes, along with Bee Eclipse, a credit-card-sized device that magnetically attaches to the back of your smartphone.

Arabic medical text from the 11th century, listing recipes for perfumes and ointments found in Ibn Sina's renowned "Canon of Medicine." The main text was copied in Hebrew characters (i.e. 'Judaeo-Arabic'), and a second hand added the red and green ornamentation in Arabic (and Hebrew) script.
Badly torn brown parchment bifolium with 8 paragraphs of Judaeo-Arabic text in black ink. Between the paragraphs are headings in a mix of Hebrew and Arabic script written in red and green ink, along with decorative symbols including floral rosettes. The background is blue and a yellow label reads T-S Ar.11.31 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-AR-00011-00031/2).

The "unrecognized" Bedouin villages in Israel are communities, mainly in the Negev Desert, that are within the 1948 borders but which the state refuses to grant political representation or provide normal services. Many or them have been forced into planned "townships." This is textbook apartheid.

🏺Fallen down a bit of an ancient Egyptian ‘fish palette’ rabbit hole today at work after researching this one currently held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. 📜 www.clevelandart.org/art/1989.32
A palette in the shape of a fish is made of graywacke stone mottled with dark gray, brown, and reddish-brown patches. At the left, a flared tail is marked with fine incised lines. Near the right edge, a circular indentation forms an eye above a tiny notch. Portions of the top and bottom edges feature small incised lines, and a single hole is pierced through the stone near the top center.

If you ask me, this is one of the most important manuscripts in the Cairo Genizah collections. It's a page from a 9th-century Quran with text from Sura 11 (Hud) about the prophet Noah (vv. 43-50). Despite this origin, it was found in a synagogue and likely owned by a Jew. @theul.bsky.social
Light, stained, horizontal parchment folio from a Quran codex, showing 8 lines of Arabic text in black ink. Red dots mark some of the vowels in the text. The margins are wide and several creases are visible running vertically across the page. A pencil label in the bottom right reads T-S Ar.38.8 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-AR-00038-00008/1).
