I’ve called this drawing Smoke City. You can see it’s unplanned, I had an idea about the kind of view I wanted it to be and an atmosphere, but then I started drawing, intrigued to see where I would end up. Hopefully you can see the work that’s gone into it and the decisions I’ve made along the way.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

Writer to writer.
:A letter from Ernest Hemingway, to F.
Scott Fitzgerald:
Key West
28 May 1934
Dear Scott,
For Christ sake write and don't worry about what the boys will say nor whether it will be a masterpiece nor what.
I write one page of masterpiece to ninety one pages of shit.
I try to put the shit in the wastebasket.
Forget your personal tragedy. We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to hurt like hell before you can write seriously. But when you get the damned hurt use it-don't cheat with it. Be as faithful to it as a scientist.
I'd like to see you and talk about things with you sober.
You were so damned stinking in NY we didn't get anywhere.
You see, Bo, you're not a tragic character. Neither am I. All we are is writers and what we should do is write.
But Scott, good writers always come back. Always. You are twice as good now as you were at the time you think you were so marvellous. You know I never thought so much of Gatsby at the time. You can write twice as well now as you ever could. All you need to do is write truly and not care about what the fate of it is. Go on and write.
Anyway I'm damned fond of you and I'd like to have a
chance to talk sometimes.
Always your friend,
Ernest

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

Steel once made up 15% of Ukraine's exports.
Russia has been pummeling the country's infrastructure with ballistic missiles and, recently, jet-powered drones to cripple its economy.

Joke Friday
After my ‘Tinder surprise’ I am not one to give out family planning advice. But I will tell you this

Do not tell your family you’re pregnant on April Fools’ Day

There is nothing as humiliating as trying to prove your’re pregnant on the family WhatsApp group

Not only did they think there was no way anyone would be mad enough to knock me up

They thought I had nothing better to do than find a sonogram of a random baby, Photoshop my name and NHS number onto it and send it to them

So I could hilariously give the impression I was leading a very reckless life to my *immediate family*. Why would I give that cringey impression to them?

When I can give it to a room full of strangersAfter my ‘Tinder surprise’ I am not one to give out family planning advice. But I will tell you this
