this is not the first time i have said this, but there’s a strain of extreme consumerism in a lot of young(ish) american leftism that’s genuinely unrecognizable to me compared to the crustier old anarchists and communists i have known well

This idea seems to be the most infectious because it activates the same neurosis that every apocalyptic or millenarian cult does. The world is going to end, and only I and my special group of people in the know can maybe stop it. (Also, you should give me money and have sex with me.)

Thirty-four days before she reported to prison, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes gave Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim access to document her every move. That turned into a three-year project, and A24 will release the resulting documentary this October.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

Yet people are so blindsided by social media now that they voluntarily expose themselves to those same diseases

This is ALWAYS THE CLUE. Our journalistic class is (mostly) self-aware enough not to publish stories that are pure bigotry and resentment, but some stories give people a facially-plausible pretext to indulge in bigotry and resentment. You notice that these stories tend to get covered A LOT.

There was a lengthy article in the New York Times yesterday about how men who had lived almost their entire lives in America were being shipped to foreign prisons with no due process and held in conditions so severe they almost died from hunger striking, and it didn’t even make a ripple.

The problem here is that they have got it precisely backwards. They want this stuff to be something that had major negative societal repercussions - a kind of Cultural Revolution in America. In fact the defining feature of the period was how *superficial,* how *weightless* these commitments were.

Biden made the right decision with problematic execution pulling out of Afghanistan and he was savaged for it daily. Trump makes one of the worst strategic decisions in U.S. history with catastrophic consequences and somehow the reaction seems milder. Am I wrong about that?

a lot of what the right does nowadays is create an emotional support system for bigots. bigotry will offend and alienate people in your life, so the right looks provides a counterweight that lavishes you with praise.

When I talk about social media being brain poison, this is what I mean. This is the same mania that took hold of Rowling and Musk and Nate Silver and many others. It doesn’t always manifest in one way. And this is someone who studied social media, specifically! It can happen to anyone.

again think about the choices that are made in the media to cover Mamdani's call for Netanyahu's arrest as if it is extremist hate speech or an incitement to violence in context of both the domestic popularity and international elite consensus around the issue.
