You mean I can ride right next to pedestrians with absolutely no training & a flagrant disregard for the law & they're STILL at far greater risk from drivers? Gee, sounds like cars are inherently dangerous af & we should get all the drivers we can onto bikes where they can do less harm forthwith.

Ordered a box of 5 more covid tests from Amazon yesterday for 6 quid. They arrived today, with a use by date of 31st October 2026. Grr. I'm likely to use a couple - but unlikely to use them all by then. If anyone local to Cambridge/Shelford can use some gimme a shout.

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

Paddling (canoeing) across Windermere today, into the teeth of a pretty stiff Force 3 wind - lumpy, and just this side of whitecaps - I came across a swimming squirrel, looking very stressed. Not a planned swim, I'm guessing. It was 300m to either shore, so I'm not sure s/he was going to be okay.

God I'm so fed up with John Lewis' and their "hey you have new rewards" email that doesn't tell you what they are (I've now logged in, they're rubbish). And the "your rewards are expiring" one which doesn't give you time to actually use them. A free piece of cake with my coffee every month was great

#Westiminster City Council agrees to continue participation in the TfL-led e-scooter trial through to 2028. (Decision: committees.westminster.gov.uk/documents/s7...) The chronology is interesting: 5 years since trial started in 2021 and #DfT still ain't learned enough to write required legislation
5.2 The chronology of recent past DfT and TfL formal extensions and their
reasoning is:
o To March 2022 - To allow time for gathering evidence following a slower
than expected start to trials during the COVID-19 pandemic.
o To November 2022 - After DfT issued updated guidance in February 2022
designed to enhance existing safety measures.
o To 31 May 2024 - To allow DfT to reflect on the further analysis or evidence
that may be needed and would be beneficial.
o To May 2026 (With extension) - To enable DfT to build on current learning
across areas including usage, safety, and environmental impacts, and to
explore changing travel patterns since the coronavirus pandemic and as escooters become more embedded in public life.
5.3 The proposed extension to May 2028 will give DfT, TfL and participating
boroughs more time to strengthen the evidence base before any long-term
decisions are made on rental or private e-scooters. In particular, the extension
will help assess:
o ongoing safety risks and benefits;
o how local street conditions affect e-scooter use;
o the role of e-scooters in supporting wider transport and micromobility policy;
and
o the evidence needed to inform any future Government decision on
permanent rental schemes or privately owned e-scooters.

Framed! (And I only spent 5 minutes doing last minute touching up before wrestling it into the frame).
Three paint by numbers pictures of lakes with rowing boats. Two are portrait format and hanging on the wall. The third features a ginger cat in the boat. It is landscape format and currently perched on the back of a dining chair between them. They all have cheap black wooden frames with acrylic "glass".

The real problem isn't that he's rich, insufferable, full of shit, or even that he's a landlord. It's the trick whereby a person's own success is presented as proof that structural constraints don't exist. “I managed it” becomes “anyone can”. “Anyone can” becomes “poverty is your own fault”.

Surprised to find the atmospheric St John’s in Duxford still open as the sun went down. A few photos of its light filled, empty as a trap, interior, with a prism under the lens. But I’ve done this before… So I photographed some cows on the cycle home, and I’ve added those.
The west window of a small church. The setting sun is throwing itself through in a rugby tackle of light. The only shadows hide in the wooden beam roof.

A prism under the lens reflects the top half of the window back on itself, so the window sits in a pool of floorless light.

The interior of the church, which is kept uncultured and austere: Pale walls, arched into shadows, glorious east and south windows, beams of light.

Again a prism under the lens reflects the top half of the photo back onto itself, a little like the church has been emptied of pews and filled with water.

A cow, added in photoshop on my phone, is grazing the light filled east end of the nave. Again, a cow, this time just standing, is in an otherwise empty church interior. A prism
Reflects the top of the photo.
