Cambridge seem moderately good at instead using "narrow lanes - no overtaking cyclists" signs (or words to that effect.

Not that I've just spent the last few weeks trying to make sure our department's new undergraduate at postgraduate students all have appropriate IT access to our systems as well as university systems, including students whose course starts a week early and ones on a joint course with another uni.

I just sat up sharply on reading that. I thought I was getting beyond surprise here.

I love the term "zero player game" for this! Other somewhat better board games: Sorry.

I actually played a game of snakes and ladders last summer with my sister and one of my younger nieces (her other auntie) which I enjoyed *enormously* because it was so ridiculous. The snake to ladder ratio was all wrong and the dice were mean and it just kept going. It should have been awful but...

"But you can't carry (a fridge, your grandmother, the christmas tree, a cement mixer) on your bike!" Well, in many cases: yes you can. But even if you can't, so what? It doesn't stop bikes being useful for other things, even if it's only for other people. It's not some total gotcha.

To be fair using "agent" to be a bit of software which sits around doing something for you is something which has been around a lot longer than current AI fads. I think there are at least three different monitoring agents on my work laptop. More travel agent than secret agent.

Hey folks. In total honesty my tour is NOT selling well. I’ve sold 30 tickets in a 400 seater in Birmingham, and not much more elsewhere. If you like musical comedy, if you like standup, then please come see my show! And spread the word! The Rachel Parris Songbook tour starts in Nov! Link in bio! 🎶

Having failed to find a sensible alternative on their system (earliest available was Saturday 17th, but I wasn't sure if I was free) I said I'd book something online when I got home. Checking all 5 "Boots Cambridge" branches - Sawston have a slot at 12:30 on Friday 9th after all. 🤞

I am even more ridiculous. Having forgotten to set an alarm to leave the office on time I was a bit late setting off, but cycled hard enough to set several PBs on Strava and got to Boots in Sawston only 1 min late. For an appointment in a week's time. FFS. I won't even be here next week!

You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while. Why? Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year. Deal? 1/15 #bees

Three days' progress.
A collage featuring two shots of a paint by numbers painting. In the first just the sky has been painted, in shades of orange and yellow and pale blue. In the second you start to see the hills emerge in shades of dark blue and grey.

Wow, it never even occurred to me that someone would butter one half of their sandwich but not the other. Somehow that's even odder than the American habit of leaving the butter out entirely...

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

I'll stick with trekking down to Sawston since otherwise I can't get one this week. Ironically I was originally booked at the GP last Saturday but cancelled because I was going to be away - and then couldn't go visit people anyway because I had a cold.

That's the one I *thought* I must've booked for if it wasn't the one in Cambridge, but I think I originally tried to book for Woollards Lane (Shelford) but they didn't have any slots until the 29th, so I accidentally booked at High Street (Sawston) when I wanted Petty Cury (actually Cambridge).

Seriously "Boots Cambridge, High Street" how am I supposed to know that's in Sawston!

LNR @lnr.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Oh god, I was just telling Mike, and he was like but Boots isn't *on* the High Street anyway, is it? No, it's not. So I had to go look up the *postcode* to find out where I've actually booked this appointment. It's in *Sawston*. FFS. At least now I won't turn up in Shelford tomorrow by mistake!

Stationery Bluesky! How/where do I buy the little card tabs in this picture? I already own an accordion-style organiser & want fresh tabs for it. I do not want: - anything sticky - to buy a new organiser! Have looked online and searched a real branch of used-to-be-WHSmith but drawn a blank.
Wonky pic I snapped in WHSmith showing an accordion-style organiser with perforated cardboard tabs on top of it.

So far today I have gone into the office only to realise I've left the laptop at home, stayed (working on a spare machine) because I had an afternoon appointment for a flu jab in town, but then turned up to realise I was at the wrong Boots, and should have been at the one near home. Redo from start?

I suppose there cut be a hidden beam across the top of the window, and a cutout in the end of the visible beam to slot into it? But then why make the visible beam so big?

I don't suppose I have a lovely friend on here who knows anything about digital pianos? Trying to buy a decent one for beginner pianist and getting bombarded by ads but I'm worried the very cheap end is going to be rubbish and my tin ear won't be able to tell.

Ironically Tesco didn't have the NHS flu available yet last week, so I'm having that today! I nearly just said "fuck it" and paid for it at the same time to save bother.

I'm not over 75 or immunosuppressed, so I'm not eligible for a free one, and paid my £90 to Tesco last week. I do at least save £20 by being eligible for the flu vaccine on the NHS though.

Matthew's primary school. Bike was definitely the only sensible option. (We didnt get a place at our catchment school because it's CofE and oversubscribed and we're not church).
A screenshot from Google Maps directions.

A 4 mile round trip for lunch? Did you have time to actually eat any lunch? (My kid biked to primary school because 2.5 miles each way would have taken far too long to walk - and he went in the cargo bike in reception and a tandem in year 1).

I'm so looking forward to going back to bus stop leap frog, where I have to carefully pull out and overtake a bus at each bus stop, only for it to overtake me again in 30 seconds time once it sets off again, repeated for the length of the road.

Thoroughly cheered up by realising a Bluesky mutual was currently sitting in a cafe less than 1.5km away and didn't mind me descending on him to enjoy a sandwich in the sunshine with some friendly company! Thanks @goakl.bsky.social We met an excellent drunken seagull.
A plushie seagull, eating a plushie chip. He was rescued from the road where he had probably stumbled, owing to the fact he's missing one plushie leg. Now sitting in the sunshine on one of the tables outside Days of Ashwell in Great Shelford.
