I don't remember commentators lauding our unity and resilience last year in the face of ACTUAL TRAGEDY like they have done today. Disgusting.

“That’s a victory for being thick skinned and defiant”, says Peter Drury. Funny, because I thought it was a victory for repeated cheating to the point that the football club should be kicked out of English football.

No one in the media will mention that the match referee is from Manchester. They won’t talk about it on coms. It’s never mentioned because English exceptionalism means referees being bent is for dirty foreigners like in Italy, not for our good old British boys.

Possibly the most robbed team is actually Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. Without City's now-confirmed cheating, they'd have had a five year dynasty to speak about. This is bigger than one club being affected. It's Lance Armstrong-Tour de France levels.

Privatization wasn’t on the ballot when Canadians voted for Mark Carney. Really foul the way he’s using the blind trust so many continue to have in him to make massive, fundamental changes to Canada (hurting normal Canadians) so big companies can profit. Please pay attention.

A good day to remind you that if Mark Carney wants investment in important things (i.e. the knowledge economy), he could just do it. But instead he's cutting those things in favour of massive military spending while soliciting foreign ownership over Canada's future.

Working on an A.I. policy for my calculus classes. Decided to be upfront about the current situation with LLMs and to give a heartfelt explanation for why the course still matters.
Al policy

Context

Artificial Intelligence, or "A.l.," Is a broad term used to refer to several different kinds of technologies. The kind most relevant to this class are Large Language Models (LLMs), which use mathematics to analyze large amounts of human-produced text and then generate new text that simulates what a human might write in response to prompts or questions. Some examples of LLMs are OpenAl's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini.Current LLMs can provide a solution to any calculus problem I give you. So why should we work on them, you might ask? Here's the thing: for the most part, the problems were already solved anyway. Calculus as a subject is nearly 400 years old. It has reached into virtually every modern scientific and economic field. And while I would like to believe that I have crafted a few new problems with some small amount of originality tailored to this class, for the most part I have curated a collection of exercises drawn from my years of teaching calculus. Those exercises come from textbooks, workshops, friends, and other fields of study, as well as my own invention.
And they nearly all have known solutions, often with fairly standard approaches.
Before A.I. became widely available, you could find those solutions in another textbook, or from a friend's notes, or through a repository on the internet. The point of this class is not necessarily to solve problems that have never been solved before. It is for you to develop habits of thinking that are used by mathematicians, scientists, and policymakers-to develop a sort of mental toolbox that can be applied to new problems. If along the way you happen to find a new way of solving one of the class exercises, that's great! I am constantly learning new things from my students. But you will be bereft of discovery if you rely on a LLM for solutions to the calculus problems before you. Here I mean the discovery of having your own realizations, crystallizing your own internal understanding, claiming the knowledge in a way that cannot be taken away from you.
That ownership is what I want for you, and that is what the course is built around.

"And what are Canadians getting in return? The beginnings of two-tiered health care, which Carney could stop at any time by reducing health transfer payments under the Canada Health Act; the proliferation of AI into all aspects of our lives without our consent; a carbon capture hub that is already slated to cost more and reduce emissions less than initially advertised; a 60% cut to nature conservation; and the authorization of pesticides that the government has deemed harmful to our health."

When Perfetti was last eligible in 2024, his long-term contract projection was 7yrs x $5.8m - he signed for 2yrs x $3.25m. With 91 being stagnant (injuries and linemates), Jets bought themselves ~$3m of cap the last two seasons in their "win-now" mode. They spent it on Nyquist and Toews.

RIP to the incomparable Sam Neill
How long has it been since you've seen the original "Jurassic Park"?

SAM NEILL The last time I watched it in its totality was sitting beside Princess Di at Leicester Square at the London opening.
On the other side of me was my son Tim - he was 11 and completely swept away by it, but about the time the T-Rex turns up, Tim started to fart. And the draft was drifting across me to royalty! I spent the whole film in a muck sweat, thinking, "Princess Di is being exposed to the horrors of a little boy's fart, but she's going to think it's me. I am going to be subliminally blamed for my son's crimes, and I don't think she'll talk to me afterwards." But she was well brought up and never mentioned it.
JEFF GOLDBLUM I love that story, Sam.
I've heard him tell that a couple of times, and it's just amazing the lengths that he will go to still blame the boy.
