My work with Creig Lamb shows that low tech adoption in Canada is due less to limited capacity (e.g. resources, skills) & more to weak incentives (e.g. limited competition, healthy profits, high skill/lowish wage alternatives). This is yet another capacity- rather than incentive-focused program.

I often think about the speed camera chopping vigilante who returned to the scene of their crime on Parkside Drive multiple times but Toronto police didn’t catch them & it led to Doug Ford banning speed cameras for 16 million people & now speeding is at epidemic levels & people will die.

Years ago I worked on a research project and had frequent interactions with a very engaged advisor. My VP asked me if the advisor was insightful. I replied that the advisor was very “inputful.” AI has moved us from sporadic to pervasive inputfulness.

Alert to Canadian Academics: The parliamentary committee report on criteria for grants (i.e. EDI) is out. It’s not good. So not a time to get too comfortable with how things are going here compared to elsewhere. Need to push back on this. EDI makes for better science. It’s not a tradeoff
