Breaking news from the DULF trial, where two founders of a drug compassion club in B.C.had previously been found guilty of trafficking but their lawyers started a constitutional challenge. The judge issued a ruling today in that constitutional challenge. A previous story: thetyee.ca/News/2026/07...

That Bush song is a banger, but that album is mixed weirdly. The songs sound kind of flat. It sounds like there's no overdubs, nothing double-tracked, almost like a demo.

Worth noting that this means if you message someone who is using Meta Muse, *even if you don't have Muse or any other Meta products installed yourself*, Facebook is reading your private communications.

Once again I must reiterate: A screenshot of a post, with no link to a reliable original source, is usually misleading at best and often completely false.

In regard to those last two retweets, it's interesting that movie/TV production, like video game investment, saw a huge boost when Covid hit, as though everyone in the industry thought that a short-term boom caused by people being stuck at home represented a new long-term normal for the industry.

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

I think setting a Silent Hill game in Scotland was a mistake, because how are you supposed to know whether the fog is a sign that something scary is about to happen or if you're just in Scotland?

I'm sorry but this is just so ridiculous. "Pain" is a function of a nervous system. A piece of software does not have a nervous system. Really sad to see a prestigious scientific publication treating this as though it's a serious question.

Are we doing Weezer discourse for some reason? Here's my stance on Weezer: They've written a bunch of hooky, pleasant songs where nothing interesting happens. If a Weezer song comes on I would never be like "Ugh this is awful turn it off" but I'd also never be like "Wow gotta pay attention to this".

All laws are implicitly backed by the threat of violence from the state. The ability to enforce a desired outcome through force is what separates a law from a suggestion. People sometimes get angry when you say this, but it's fairly non-controversial in political science. See, for example:
