I would be more impressed if a language model trained entirely on human-authored text automatically understood that it was a machine that did not feel pain or anything else But the probabilistic human response to pain is "ouch" so it says "ouch."

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

D&D peaked with the wiener-biting face-stabbing scorpadillo. And check out that snake. That's fucking peak snaking, I dare say. Heroes wore mawashi, kitty-ear head bands, and NOTHING ELSE. No scabbards no belts no backpacks. Grognards long for the golden age. An ago of wiener-biting & kitty ears

Insisting that LLMs are Not People is not an academic argument about the nature of sapience or free will. It's a rejection of accountability laundering. If non-determinism made machines responsible for their own actions then revolvers used in Russian Roulette should be indicted for murder.

Referring to the harm as being caused by LLMs, when it is caused by people, actually serves to exonerate the people as if they did not make explicit decisions.

The point isn't "people can't be harmed by LLMs." It's, "the harm it does was explicitly chosen by other people, who can and should be held accountable."

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.

I'm just going to keep yelling this louder and louder until it clicks: weird overpaid AI nerds hand-wringing about human extinction are trying to distract you from the extremely deadly and serious harms they are causing yesterday, today and tomorrow www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Headline: "US Data Centers Set to Burn More Natural Gas Than Most Nations" above a photo of natural gas compressor towers, power lines and a crane at an industrial site, illustrating rising gas use tied to data centers.News excerpt reporting that U.S. data centers’ natural gas use is expected to grow by 15 billion cubic feet per day by 2035—amounting to more gas than every country except China, Russia, Iran and the U.S., citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

my worry about ai isn’t that it will become sentient, it’s that the cognitive impact of outsourcing critical thinking to computers combined with the proliferation of slop making it increasingly challenging to validate information will dissolve society’s already-tenuous grasp on consensus reality

these people really want to make "racist" akin to a slur rather than what it is, a straightforward label for a set of beliefs and views. if you don't like the label because you, correctly, associate it with degenerate chuds, then get better beliefs

Plagiarism is only one part of a much broader scope of academic misconduct, and ‘race realism’ is itself a form of academic misconduct: using academia to launder long-discredited and empirically refuted white supremacist propaganda. It is disseminating pernicious lies into broader society

A wee group of angry balaclava and mask-wearing anti-immigration guys tried to stop the good people of Glasgow showing solidarity with migrants and standing up to racism and fascism. Well, the far right are far outnumbered... #RefugeesWelcome #MigrantsWelcome #NeighboursNotStrangers #Glasgow
Photo of a small group of mostly men wearing black, with masks and balaclavas, surrounded by a Police Scotland cordon in the bottom of the photo, in the foreground. In the background, a very large colourful crowd of people with saltires, trade union banners, and hand-made signs in support of migrants and against racism have turned up to gather to show solidarity, and the far right guys were hoping to thwart that. They didn't.
