It is not permitted to request jury nullification during a trial but it is permissible to discuss it abstractly. Jury nullification is the synthesis of two rules. First, the prosecution cannot appeal a jury verdict of not guilty. Second, a jury issuing a verdict of not guilty need not explain itself

Christa Pike was tortured yesterday by the state of TN in every single USians name and the fact is that this is a country that is mostly OK with this. This says everything about all of us. We are all implicated in this barbaric practice. It's sickening.

It’s sickening to me that we put people through this, including my journalist colleagues who have witnessed multiple executions, who have to try to make sense of what they’ve seen. Grateful to @iamstevenhale.bsky.social and everyone else for bearing witness to this barbarism masquerading as justice.

I am not in TN tonight. I am in Oklahoma, where we stood outside the prison in 2015 while they almost killed Richard Glossip with the wrong drug. He did not go through the ordeal Christa Pike suffered tonight. But others have. It makes me so angry to see this cruelty repeated again and again.

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

In the last decade, the number of people incarcerated in Cook County Jail decreased by nearly 40%. Simultaneously there was also dramatic decrease in crime rates. Nonetheless, the Department of Corrections & State's Attorney budgets have not seen cuts that coincide with these reductions.

Chicago's city council empowered COPA last March to investigate alleged collaboration between CPD and ICE. Since then, people have filed at least 7 reports with COPA over ICE using local police facilities, including the 25th District station that connects to a Cook County courthouse.

The pattern dates back to the onset of the ICE surge. Last October, before new signage was installed reminding both feds and cops of the ban on using city property for immigration enforcement, federal vehicles were seen exiting another police parking lot in the 24th District:

Videos provided by witnesses show ICE agents transferring immigrant detainees between cars in Chicago police parking lots at least twice this summer: on July 5 in the 11th District, and on Aug 28 in the 25th District. The Aug 28 transfer was also captured by CPD's own surveillance camera:

We spoke with that observer, who said ICE agents held her for hours. By the time they released her, her car had been towed. She also said she saw Chicago cops glad-handing with ICE. Hard to confirm, as the surveillance video file we obtained via FOIA request is missing nearly two hours of footage.

why this is notable: the alpr photos show martinez and ruiz in the 30 days *before* the crash in brighton park. during that time, neither was under investigation for a crime, but police were able to retrace their movements anyway in an attempt to fabricate pretense for criminal charges.

the use of local surveillance tech to justify federal felony charges against martinez and ruiz isn’t especially remarkable on its own. yet many advocates say the case shows how easily private information can pass from one agency to another with seemingly little, if any, oversight or transparency.

This from the GOP nominee for IL governor is why you don't cede civil rights issues to these people by uncritically supporting the surveillance state.
Darren Bailey

If Flock cameras had been as widespread during COVID as they are today, do you really think they wouldn't have been used to track who left their house, who crossed state lines, and who showed up to Church?

We lived through it. Remember that.

STATEMENT FROM THE VILLAGE OF EAST DUNDEE REGARDING OKTOBERFEST 2026

The Village of East Dundee has received a number of questions and comments regarding the introduction of gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey at Saturday's Oktoberfest, Mr. Bailey's subsequent remarks, and the mentioning of other political candidates by Village President Pearson.

Neither Mr. Bailey, nor any other political candidate was specifically invited to attend Oktoberfest by the Village, any member of Village staff, or any Village elected official.
