To hold traumatic reality in consciousness requires a social context that affirms and protects the victim and joins victims and witnesses in common alliance... For the larger society, the social context is created by political movements that give voice to the disempowered. ~ Judith Herman, M.D.

Many people have recently reached out to me regarding the current situation in Irkutsk. Right now, the information environment there is both too sparse and too unreliable to base any firm analysis and / or prediction on. The next week will make the picture much clearer.

I think it’s a big problem that most of the public is totally unfamiliar w/one of the worst yet common outcomes from Covid, namely ME/CFS. I often share this Sundance doc bc I think being able to visualize the harm (as we can for, say, polio) makes it easier to understand the desire to mitigate it.

Lately, I've seen ableism show up as the idea that people are more worthy when they're "out there in person" making & doing things, rather than "lying around at home" or on a keyboard. This framing ties our value to productivity & devalues people w chronic illness who are homebound

Our books have arrived! How about a little look at that front cover flap? #BookSky #GothicHorror
Emily Dixon's family is moving because of her brother's chang-es. Jarvis Vaulk feels strangely safe as a storm rages outside his home, while a twice-evicted folk singer will do anything to be left alone. And John Tillman?
He's confronting hidden evils in a house for his clients ...

Welcome to What A Charming House, a gothic horror collection about the terrors and desires that haunt us and the places we inhabit.

These 24 tales, ranging from horror to satire, confessional to fairy tale, and ballad to fable, together create a singularly dark vision of the home ownership dream. Because along with the vengeful ghosts and sentient abodes, are the everyday evils of greed, intolerance, and what happens when people are taken to the extremes of their beliefs.

Inspired by writers such as Shirley Jackson, Henry James, Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, the Brontë sis-ters, Elizabeth Bowen, and Angela Carter — as well as folklore, religion, ballads, and family lore these tales of creeping ambiguity are, by turn, psychologically unsettling, darkly comic, and deeply human ...
