A cluster of very tiny white flowers, each with five petals and a very tiny yellow stamen in the centre. The flowers grow between even tinier spiky green leaves on a bush with long twigs covered in more leaves and flowers.

A single passionflower among green leaves. It has a ring of pointy green tepals, then a mane of needle-like purple petals surrounding a green ring, out of the centre of which grows a tree-like structure with huge stamens and several knuckle-shaped stigmas. It’s such an alien thing and I love it.

If you are at a conference use. the. microphone. It doesn't matter how loud you think you are, it doesn't matter if you are a speaker or audience member. You should try to accommodate people who are hard of hearing (otherwise you're excluding them!)

Yesterday I helped a student with a 3rd year physics course and the lecture had the same letter in the same font and weight representing three different things on the same slide and it was infuriating.

In the foreground are two magnificent bird-of-paradise blooms with a solid green-purple pointy body above which is a deep navy petal and a shock of bright orange petals. Long pointy green leaves stand upwards all around and more flowers are visible in the background. Further back is the verandah and chimney of a heritage house with a bright blue sky above it.

A tight fluster of tiny white flowers. Each flower has five completely separate white petals and a ring of white stamens longer than the petals. From a distance this makes the cluster of flowers look fuzzy. The leaves in the background are dark green and orange and red. Many tiny brown and grey bugs are foraging in the flowers.

Australian native frangipani blossoms. Each blossom has five separated petals which are curled both lengthways and widthways. A green stigma pokes from the centre of the petals, with stamens squeezed through the gap around it. The flowers are various shades of yellow ranging from almost white to deep warm yellow. The leaves are dark green and shiny.

Helped a student with Real Analysis in #MathsToday. We were writing proofs and I was writing sentences on the page in approximately the places they would have to go. “What’s this gap?” “That’s where I’ll tell the reader what N is.” “How will you do that?” “I don’t know yet.”

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

On the bedtime story front: Three years ago, if you couldn’t make up a bedtime story yourself, you *bought a book* that someone else made with care and heart and read that aloud, thus supporting an artist who took care and gave heart.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

I've got some stock and a mountain of Sharpies that just won't quit, so if anyone'd like to furnish the discerning bookish history nerd in their life with a chunky tome that focuses on that stuff that all the other history books seem to miss out, now's your chance! #Books #History #Maths
A richly illustrated copy of The Mathematicians’ Library lies open on a wooden surface, featuring a large circular astronomical diagram with zodiacal and planetary markings, surrounded by classical figures. Overlaid text advertises “Author-Signed copies available” and “£25 + £5 p&p (UK only)”.

I’ve realised something today: Quite a few lecturers don’t refer students to Maths Learning Support because they think that what the students are facing isn’t maths (“It’s just charts and percentages. That’s not maths. ”) or that it’s too basic (“That’s just primary school stuff”).

I love that the area of a parabolic arch is 2/3 of base times height. It's so simple.
An arch shaped like a downwards-opening parabola cut off at the bottom with a horizontal line. It's coloured in blue.
The height from base to vertex is labelled with a lowercase h.
The base is labelled with a lowercase b.
To the side and written in blue is the formula A = two thirds b h.

A red bottlebrush blossom. The last ten centimetres of a hanging twig are completely full of 2cm-long bright red stamens each with a tiny yellow tip. If you look very closely you can see the individual flowers the stamens come from, which have bright green bases and five tough pale green sepals. In the background are strappy green leaves hanging downwards and other similar blossoms.
