Walking around in the bush with my head down again this morning. I’m absolutely in love with the gills on this mushroom. I think it might be a type of oysterling. 🍄🌿
Looking at the underside of a frilly oyster mushroom. The different lobes overlap, each other kind of like a nudibranch, it’s tan gills form, beautiful, ripping patterns.

Shit man, this is actually what I need to integrate more into my work. So much of what I struggle with is my instinctive tendency to try to plaster weird over a bedrock of logistic realism and it just ends up diluting it.

I do read romance and this caught me in a ticked-off mood, because what gets me with brilliant human-crafted romance books is that we know the HEA is coming, but it's how each wonderful writer chooses to get there. Like, the very format removes tension, but the best of romance writers inject it.

Spotted what I'm pretty sure is a queen on my lunchtime adventures. She was super chill and *big*. The biggest bumblebee I've seen. #invertebrates #beeposting #beesky
A big bumblebee sits on a red marigold.

By big, it must be emphasized that she is literally as big as the flower she's lying on.Same bumblebee, from above instead of the side.

One could argue that as the most widely read genre, romance is most deserving of care and attention, a refusal to concede to bland extruded text from the Average Intelligence machine. The potential to reach the greatest number of readers with your art, with your intellect, can be through romance.

There are mountains of formulaic cookie cutter romances. Some of it is in fact written by machines, and there are readers who don't care or notice. But the genre deserves BETTER, not to be consigned to the slop heap because romance can't possibly aspire to more skill or imagination or quality.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Lukewarm genre take: the desire for precision when tonally sorting or categorizing books has led to a trend in avoiding categorizing something as part of a broad genre (e.g. "fantasy"). Sometimes a book is best categorized as just "fantasy" vs. grimdark or cozy. I think a discomfort

The past week has been busy with some deadlines but finally got around to taking some photos of these star stag tote bags locally printed by the fantastic Resonance Printing! These are available via my online store ( miholics-shop.ca / link in bio )
An off white tote back featuring a black ink illustration featuring a bounding stag, the ends of its antlers taking on the shape of stars. Another star sits above its head, more stars surrounding the deer. Many simple little drawings in a rock art style with more star horned stags are by the upper left and bottom right of the animal. Floral motifs with the flowers taking on a heart shape surround them and the illustration is framed by simple patterned borders. Wild grape leaves frame the bag.A close up of the bounding stag's head.A close up of the rock art style star stags.

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

This is absolutely part of the literacy crisis and it requires active, critical reading to combat. I've made a goal this year of reading the book in front of me instead of wishing the author had done x or y differently, and it's been a wonderful return to form.

I think wanting precise outcomes and strict representation from a book is part of the literacy crisis. People are looking at representation and not the thesis of the book and how characters work within it.

Onagadori Rooster. Ink and gouache on Fabriano Medioevalis, 85 × 132 mm, 2022.
Drawing in black ink, primarily in silhouette, of an Onagadori rooster with long flowing tail covert feathers on a plum blossom branch. The rooster's comb and wattle are the only spots of red. The piece is smaller than a postcard and is photographed with the traditional Chinese brush it was drawn with.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.
